Apple Pie Baking contest

From Fall’s harvest to Thanksgiving dinner, everybody loves a warm, delicious apple pie…step back in time a bit when all pies were made from scratch and no Sunday supper was complete without a pie hot from the oven. Follow the evolution of the apple pie.

How? An Apple Pie Contest! Marker-Miller Orchards Farm Market and Classic Design and Upholstery of Winchester in conjunction with the 81st Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® will be hosting and sponsoring the 6th annual Apple Pie Baking Contest.

Once again, “peel your apples” will be heard on Thursday morning, May 1st, at 9 a.m. located at the Marker-Miller Orchards and Farm Market - 3035 Cedar Creek Grade, Winchester, VA. The contest is slated to start at 9:00 a.m. and pies must be in the oven no later than 10:00 a.m., with judging commencing at Noon. Contestants must bring all ingredients measured and ready to use, all utensils, and a clear glass 9” pie plate. Pies will be judged on crust and filling qualities- a score sheet will be given with every application. Prizes for the adult category, ages 17 and older, will be $75.00 for first place, $50.00 for second place. There is a youth category for ages 16 and under with prizes being $50.00 for first place and second place being $25.00. The winners of this contest will ride in the Grand Feature Parade on Saturday, May 3rd.

The contest was first held in 1952 with Betty Crocker as one of the original judges. Held yearly until the early 1980’s this contest has taken a break, but is back again for the 6th year.
