BB&T Concert Band Competition

band competitionThe 37th annual Concert Band Competition will begin at 8 a.m., Friday, May 2nd on the campus of Shenandoah University in Winchester. Schools are divided into classifications according to the grade level/difficulty of the music performed. Each band is required to perform three selections within a 30 minute period and two of those selections must be chosen from the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors’ graded music list. In addition to the presentation of the Shenandoah Cup, first and second place trophies are awarded in each classification. The Shenandoah Cup is awarded to the outstanding band participating in the competition. All bands receiving a Superior Rating will receive a plaque. ADMISSION IS FREE!!

Class C:
1st Place: Fairfax High School
2nd Place: South Hagerstown High School
3rd Place: Phoebus High School

Class B:
1st Place: North Hagerstown High School
2nd Place: South Hagerstown High School
3rd Place: Merrill High School

Class Jr. High/Middle School:
1st Place: George Washington Middle School

Overall Awards:
Shenandoah Cup – 1st Place Overall:
North Hagerstown High School

President’s Award – 2nd Place Overall:
George Washington Middle School

Director’s Award – 3rd Place Overall:
South Hagerstown High School

Superior Ratings:
North Hagerstown High School


Competition Information

Performance Schedule
By classification, beginning with Class C and concluding with Class A.
Competition starts at 8:00 a.m.

Entrance
Limited to one band per school unless space permits.

Fee
$100.00 per band.

Classification
Determined by the lowest grade level piece performed for adjudication.
- Class A Music Grade VI
- Class B Music Grade V & VI
- Class C Music Grade IV, V & VI
- Middle school and junior high school bands will perform for ratings and comments only.

Performance Requirements
Each band is judged on three selections. One selection may be a march or other nongraded selection, while the two must be chosen from the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association music list which will be forwarded upon acceptance.

Evaluation
By three adjudicators.

Awards
Bands achieving a Rating I will receive an award for that accomplishment. Bands receiving I and II ratings will be eligible for the following awards:

  • The Shenandoah Cup for the outstanding band.
  • The President’s Award for the band achieving the second highest point total regardless of classification.
  • The Director’s Award for the band achieving the third highest point total regardless of classification.

First, Second and Third place awards are presented in each classification. Bands will receive individual score sheets and a cassette recording of each judge’s comments.
