Coronation of
Queen Shenandoah
The Coronation of Queen Shenandoah is one of the oldest and most notable traditions of the Apple Blossom Festival. Many Winchester residents recall the magnificent pageants produced for so many years by the late Dr. Garland R. Quarles. Pageants were held on the steps of Handley High School and schoolchildren from Winchester’s schools performed for the Queen and her Court.
Now participants and audiences enjoy the talent of Vernon and Mary Ruth Joyner who graciously design, choreograph and direct the Coronation.
The traditional Royal Command Performance is still performed for the Queen and presented in her honor by the Handley Singers.
The Coronation is held at Handley High School on Friday, May 4th at 1:30 p.m. The Coronation is sponsored by The Winchester Star.
