Convention & visitors' bureau historic tours

Abrams DelightThe Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® and the Winchester-Frederick County Convention and Visitors’ Bureau, backed by several local restaurants and motels/hotels, are bringing back a pair of historic tours for the 81st Festival.

The first tour is titled “Historic Homes Tours”, Tuesday, April 29 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Meet at the Loudoun Street Autopark in Old Town Winchester. The Historic Homes Tour itinerary is as follows:

8:15 Depart Loudoun St. Autopark
8:25 Tour Daniel Morgan House 226 Amherst St. Winchester
9:00 Tour Abram’s Delight Museum, 1340 S. Pleasant Valley Rd.
9:45 Leave for Middletown after quick restroom break at new Visitor Center
10:00 Tour Hoffman House, 7827 Main St. Middletown.
10:30 Refreshments at Wayside Inn, 7783 Main St. Middletown, in reserved room, finger sandwiches, fresh-baked sweet apple bread, pastries, coffee, tea.
11:15 Tour Belle Grove Plantation, 336 Belle Grove Rd. Middletown.

court houseThe second tour is titled “Blue and Gray of Yesterday”, also on Tuesday, April 29, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. - some walking involved with this tour. Meet at the Loudoun Street Autopark in Old Town Winchester, the Blue and Gray of Yesterday tour will make stops at the following sites, :

1 - Stonewall Jackson’s Headquarters Museum - An 1854 Hudson River Gothic Revival style house that has been restored much as it was when Jackson used it as his headquarters. Displays include his prayer book and camp table.

2 - Old Court House Civil War Museum - This 1840 courthouse served as a prison and hospital during the Civil War. Exhibit features graffiti written by soldiers and includes over 3,000 artifacts of the war, ranging from buttons to cannonballs.

3 - Cedar Creek Battlefield - 1864 Union Victory. Guided bus tour of site. Annual reenactment of battle occurs third weekend in October on original battlefield with 8-10,000 re-enactors.

4 - Mt. Hebron Cemetery - A serene place of tradition and beauty, Mount Hebron has been Winchester's burying ground from the city's inception. With grave stones dating back to the 1760s, the cemetery land was donated by Lord Fairfax to the local Lutheran and German Reformed Churches. Among those buried are Civil War soldiers, generals, governors, patriots, and humble citizens from every age.
