Festival announces theme for 85th
April and May of 2012 will mark the 85th Anniversary of the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival®. For this special occasion, the Festival’s Theme Committee once more took the very natural turn toward all things musical for the Festival’s 2012 Theme. Led by Festival President, Tom Scully, that idea was nuanced toward sophisticated music: something jazzy; something hip. Hip, jazzy, sophisticated music…..where else to turn but to the inimitable George Gershwin and his 20th century jazz masterpiece: “Rhapsody in Blue.” The tie-in possibilities seemed endless; and, the title was easily transformed into a clever bit of wordplay “Rhapsody in Bloom;” and, with that, the theme for the 2012 Festival was chosen.
The cover of the 2012 Festival Souvenir Program Book will feature an elegant line drawing of the West Piccadilly Street portion of the Parade Route, looking northeast, with the iconic dome of the Handley Library in the background. Sharing the green-tinted background is some of the sheet music for Gershwin’s anthem. In the foreground in white, sitting on the street, yet disembodied from it, is a concert grand piano. From the open lid of the piano, also in white, a stream of musical bars, clefs and notes fly enthusiastically upward toward the sky. Intermingled with the musical notation are beautiful pink apple blossoms of many sizes; and, prominent among the blossoms is one particular blossom next to the piano that creates a very clever transition between the piano and the other erupting blossoms. Among and across its five pink petals, a green-tinted piano keyboard twists in elegant curves mimicking a stylized logo from a 1930s Gershwin concert poster. This “Pulse of the Jazz Age” feel is matched in the Art Deco font used for the title. The stylized blossom will be the single most representative image of the 2012 Festival, its morphed keyboard/blossom message playing out on so many levels, cleverly illustrating figuratively and literally the theme “Rhapsody…..in…..Bloom.”
This year's theme artwork - designed by Erik Zimmerman of White Spider Design, Inc. - marks the 9th year that Zimmerman has developed theme art for the Festival. His first was the 77th - "All Roads Lead To Apple Blossom." "Each year is exciting and challenging as I create the new theme design, I always enjoy the process of collaberation with the talented and creative Festival Theme Committee. I look forward to many more theme designs", said Zimmerman.
The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® will run from April 27th through May 6th, 2012. Tickets can be ordered by mail, online ordering will be available soon.
