Pastor Paul Wilde to Serve as Pr elate for the Coronation of Queen Shenandoah XCIX

Pastor Paul Wilde serves Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church on the south end of Winchester. He received his pre-seminary degree from Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota, and graduated from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, Wisconsin, with a Master of Divinity in 2018.

While in college, he served in the Minnesota Army National Guard and deployed to Kuwait in 2011–12 in support of Operation New Dawn. He was ordained in the summer of 2018 and began his pastoral ministry at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Owosso, Michigan, where he served until moving to Winchester to serve Shepherd of the Hills in the summer of 2023.

Pastor Wilde and his wife, Meghan, enjoy traveling and spending time outdoors, hiking in the mountains, kayaking on the Shenandoah, and skiing and snowboarding in the winter.

Firefighter and Former NFL Football Player, Rashard Higgins to Serve as 2026 Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® Firefighters’ Marshal

Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® President Jeremy Luttrell is pleased to announce that Rashard Higgins, firefighter and former professional football player, will serve as Firefighters’ Marshal during the Festival’s 99th celebration.

Rashard Higgins is recognized not only for his career as a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL), but also for his strong commitment to community service and personal growth beyond the game. Born October 7, 1994, in Dallas, Texas, Higgins has earned a reputation as both a dedicated athlete and a service-driven individual.

Higgins played college football at Colorado State University, where he became one of the most accomplished receivers in program history. His standout 2014 season included 96 receptions for 1,750 yards and 17 touchdowns, earning consensus All-American honors and national recognition.

He was selected in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns, where he developed into a dependable target, including during the team’s 2020 playoff run. Higgins later continued his professional career with the Carolina Panthers.

Beyond his accomplishments on the field, Rashard has distinguished himself through his dedication to public service. During NFL offseasons, he has pursued firefighting training—an uncommon and demanding path that reflects his commitment to protecting others and serving his community. His passion for firefighting underscores his values of teamwork, discipline, and putting others first.

Higgins has also remained actively engaged in community outreach, mentorship, and fan engagement. Through both informal efforts and organized initiatives, he has embraced the responsibility of using his platform to make a positive impact.

“Rashard’s journey is a powerful example of purpose beyond the game,” said Luttrell. “His commitment to service and community makes him an outstanding choice to serve as Firefighters’ Marshal during our 99th Festival.”

Higgins will lead the Hang 10 Car & Dog Wash Firefighters’ Parade , which steps off at 6:00 pm on Friday evening, May 1. He will also make several appearances earlier on Friday including the Trex Fire Truck Rodeo, Antique Show & Kids’ Activities at Millbrook High School, Coronation of Queen Shenandoah located at Handley High School, and the White House Foods First Responders Recognition Reception at Millwood Station Banquet Hall. Rashard will also make an appearance at the Partlow Insurance Sports Breakfast at 9:00 am on Saturday morning, May 2, and participate in the Glo Fiber Grand Feature Parade at 1:30 pm.

Festival Special Guest - Kennedy Fewell

The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® proudly announces Kennedy Fewell, Miss Virginia Volunteer She will take part in festival activities and ride through the Hang 10 Car Wash Firefighters’ Parade and Glofiber Grand Feature Parade.

Kennedy Fewell , currently serving as Miss Virginia Volunteer, is a dedicated advocate for service, leadership, and female empowerment throughout the Commonwealth. Her passion for giving back is reflected in her work with The Salvation Army and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, where she has logged more than 300 hours of volunteer service in recent months.

An entrepreneur and storyteller, Fewell owns the online boutique Shop June Ivy and hosts the podcast More to Me. She is also the founder of The Rise Project, an initiative focused on inspiring confidence, resilience, and leadership in young people through afterschool programs. In addition, she is currently writing her first children’s book, Miss Jubilee’s Joyride.

Through the Miss Virginia Volunteer Organization, Fewell has earned more than $20,000 in scholarships, allowing her to pursue a master’s degree in communication at Liberty University. She will go on to represent Virginia at the Miss Volunteer America Competition this June.

Fewell is excited to attend her first Apple Blossom Festival and experience the tradition and community spirit that make the event so special.

The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® proudly announces Kate Linder, television actress of the Young and the Restless . She will take part in festival activities and ride through the Hang 10 Car Wash Firefighters’ Parade and Glofiber Grand Feature Parade.

Kate Linder is internationally recognized for her role as Esther Valentine on The Young and the Restless , a character she has portrayed for more than 40 years since joining the cast in 1982. Her longevity and impact in daytime television have earned her numerous honors, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and induction into the Silver Circle at the Daytime Emmy Awards.

In addition to her television success, Linder has appeared in a variety of films, including Hysteria, Miss Meadows, Mother's Day , and her upcoming film Basic. She also continues to work as a flight attendant with United Airlines, balancing her career in entertainment with her life in the skies.

Linder is deeply committed to philanthropy, serving as a longtime ambassador for the ALS Network and supporting numerous causes, including Habitat for Humanity, the Los Angeles Mission, and many charities in Canada with her annual charity teas. She has also participated in USO tours around the world, visiting and supporting members of the U.S. military.

Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® Names Heisman Trophy Winner and Pro Football Hall of Famer Tim Brown as 2026 Sports Marshal

The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival is proud to announce that Tim Brown, one of the most accomplished wide receivers in both collegiate and professional football history, has been named the Sports Marshal for the 2026 festival and is sponsored by Rubbermaid Commercial Products.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest to ever play the game, Brown rose to national prominence at University of Notre Dame, where his electrifying playmaking ability earned him the distinction of becoming the first wide receiver to win the Heisman Trophy in 1987.

Following his historic collegiate career, Brown was selected sixth overall in the 1988 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Raiders. Over an extraordinary 16-season career with the Raiders, he became one of the league’s most prolific receivers, earning nine Pro Bowl selections and recording 1,094 career receptions, ranking fifth in NFL history. His remarkable contributions to the franchise earned him the nickname “Mr. Raider” and culminated in his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2015.

Today, Brown continues to impact the game as a host on SiriusXM Radio’s NFL and college football programming. He resides in Dallas with his wife and four children.

Beyond the field, Brown is deeply committed to community service. He plays an active role in the “9-1-1 for Kids” program, helping educate children on emergency preparedness, and serves as an ambassador for the President’s Council on Physical Fitness on behalf of Reebok. A man of strong faith, Brown is also actively involved in his church and frequently speaks to groups about his beliefs.

Local Author, Historian, and Storyteller Mike Robinson to Serve as Featured Speaker at Ladies Horticultural Luncheon

The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® is pleased to announce that Mike Robinson will serve as the Featured Speaker at the Ladies Horticultural Luncheon, presented by Hilltop, and hosted by the Women’s Auxiliary of the Virginia Horticultural Society on Friday, May 1, 2026.

A lifelong resident of the Shenandoah Valley, Mike Robinson is a respected local historian, author, and storyteller whose work has brought the rich history of Winchester and Frederick County to life for thousands. A graduate of James Wood High School, Class of 1988, Robinson developed a deep appreciation for the region’s heritage at an early age—an interest that would later define his career.

He is best known as the author of the Winchester Tales book series and the creator of the widely followed Winchester Tales Facebook page, which connects more than 40,000 readers who share a passion for local history and storytelling.

Robinson’s journey also took him beyond the Valley. In 1994, he moved to Los Angeles, where he worked in the animation industry with Hanna-Barbera and Nickelodeon Animation Studio. During this time, he served as a Production Coordinator on the beloved children’s television series Dora the Explorer, gaining valuable experience in storytelling and creative production.

In 2004, Robinson returned home to Winchester and completed his history degree at Shepherd University, focusing on Civil War studies. Since then, he has dedicated himself to preserving and sharing the stories of the region, blending careful research with a warm and engaging narrative style that resonates with both longtime residents and newcomers alike.

Robinson is currently partnering with the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival on his most ambitious project to date—100 Stories of the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival – Celebrating 100 Years. This highly anticipated book explores the festival’s origins and highlights the people, places, and traditions that have shaped its legacy in the Shenandoah Valley. Based on extensive research and firsthand interviews, the book offers a unique and personal look at one of the region’s most cherished traditions. Limited copies will be available for early order in Fall 2026, with wide release planned during the festival’s 100th centennial celebration in 2027.

Robinson is honored to be part of the 99th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival®, a celebration that embodies the history and community pride he has spent years documenting. Through his writing, speaking, and ongoing research, he continues to connect people to the stories that make Winchester such a special place to call home. He also extends his gratitude to his wife, Amanda, and children, Amelia and Fynnley, for their continued love and support.

Kevin Covert Named Court Ambassador to Queen Shenandoah XCIX

The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® is proud to announce that Kevin Covert, Director of Musical Theatre and Associate Professor of Theatre at the Shenandoah Conservatory, will serve as Court Ambassador to Queen Shenandoah XCIX during the 2026 festival.

The Musical Theatre program at Shenandoah University is widely recognized as one of the top programs in the nation, with Covert’s students regularly appearing on Broadway, national tours, television, and film. Covert himself brings an impressive professional background as a Broadway performer, having appeared in the original Broadway casts of Spamalot and Memphis—the latter earning a Fred Astaire Award nomination in 2010—as well as the revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying alongside Daniel Radcliffe, Darren Criss, and Nick Jonas. He can also be heard on the original Broadway cast recordings of these productions.

Covert’s touring credits include South Pacific, Cats, Grand Hotel, and the 50th Anniversary production of Oklahoma!. Regionally, he has performed at renowned theaters across the country, including Goodspeed Musicals, Sacramento Music Circus, Houston TUTS, Kansas City Starlight, and North Shore Music Theatre.

In addition to his work as a performer and educator, Covert has collaborated extensively with Tony Award-winning choreographer Christopher Gattelli (Newsies, Death Becomes Her), serving as one of his associates. Their work together includes the Broadway revival of South Pacific and the world premiere of Emmet Otter, which has been staged at Goodspeed, Off-Broadway, and most recently in Chicago. Covert has also taught, directed, and choreographed productions across the United States and has studied under notable mentors including José Quintero, Craig Carnelia, and Fred Chappell.

As Court Ambassador, Covert will take part in several of the Festival’s most celebrated events, including the Coronation of Queen Shenandoah at John Handley High School on Friday, May 1, 2026 at 1:30 p.m. He will also ride in the Hang 10 Car Wash Firefighters’ Parade later that evening at 6:00 p.m., and the Glofiber Grand Feature Parade on Saturday, May 2, 2026 at 1:30 p.m.

Festival Announces Selection of Princesses

The selection of Princesses to serve in the Court of Queen Shenandoah XCIX for the 2026 Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® has been announced by festival officials. The princesses include Madeline Grace Briskey, Savannah Lynn Judy, Payton Olivia Smith, Alexandra Corin Van Meter, and Niyah Simone Wright.

The Princesses will accompany Queen Shenandoah XCIX and her Court to all Festival functions throughout the 99th Festival, scheduled for April 24 ^th to May 3 ^rd , 2026. They will participate in the Coronation Ceremony to be held on Friday, May 1, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. at John Handley High School. They will attend the Queen's Ball and Dance Party, presented by Insurance Center of Winchester, to celebrate the coronation of Queen Shenandoah XCIX, to be held Friday, May 1st, beginning at 8:30 pm at the Winchester Country Club. They will ride on the Royal Float in the Glo Fiber Grand Feature Parade scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, May 2, 2026.

Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® and Local Businesses Partner with Sherando High School Art Department Students for the Creation of the Fourth Annual Festival-Inspired Coloring Book

Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® and the Sherando High School Art Department have once again partnered up to create the fourth annual Festival-inspired coloring book. It highlights popular Apple Blossom events, including a few new ones, highlighting the first Jimmy Buffet Tribute Dance Party! SHS art teacher, Jillian Legge, shared that, “It has really been a privilege to see how this project has evolved over the past four years and how excited the students are to be able to be a part of the experience of taking ownership over something that gets distributed throughout the entire community. To celebrate the success and effort of our students on the coloring book, the Apple Blossom Festival hosted a launch party in the Sherando art room, treating the students to pizza and giving them each a copy of the book. It is a fun experience for the students to see the final coloring book in print for the first time. We really appreciate the opportunity the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® has allowed our students to have. It is truly very special.” The funds that the high school art department raised from last year’s fundraiser were used to purchase materials for the school’s fine art show that occurs at the end of the school year to recognize all the hard work students have put in throughout the year. Other ways that the department has been able to benefit from the fundraiser have been being able to purchase additional drying racks, storage systems, and allow students the opportunity to attend interactive field trips to experience art and culture in and around the Shenandoah Valley. With the funds raised this school year, the art department intends on purchasing a brand-new potter’s wheel for a new 3D art course! Engaging the next generation of festival goers continues to be a priority for the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® and this partnership has opened another door to working with and supporting local students. This project has proven to be a perfect fit for both organizations.

Returning for a second year to help with the creation of the coloring book, Helen Chestnut has played an integral role in helping the students to edit and fine tune each page, giving positive feedback and constructive criticism when needed. "I think this is such a creative and exciting way for our students to be able to interact with their community and appreciate how the Apple Blossom Festival has developed over time. This year, we worked with students to revisit the festivals and events of Apple Blossoms past. We learned about the history of the festival and took inspiration from how events have evolved over the years."

Joining the art department for her first-year of teaching this school year is Leah Rogers. Despite the busyness that comes with being a first-year teacher, Ms. Rogers still found time to assist in providing feedback and constructive criticism for student pages. She played a key role in the finalization of the coloring pages after students submitted their first drafts.

School involvement has been a vital component of the Festival since it began. High school bands have performed in parades, demonstrating their musical abilities, while many students have taken part in the Bloomin Mile race. In addition, the carnival and midway have drawn large numbers of student attendees over the years. The coloring book project highlights students’ artistic talents and reflects the personal connections they have developed with the Festival. SHS senior Gracie Lee said, “This is my third year in a row working on the coloring book! I think it's a really great chance for everyone to come together and see different perspectives and art styles. It’s really cool to see how everyone’s different pages combine into one big project.”

Another senior at SHS, Olivia Stapleton, created both the page for the Prayer Brunch, as well as the cover for this year’s book. When asked about her work, she stated “I felt like this was a great opportunity to share my skills with other people and the community. This is the first time I had the chance to work on the cover of the book and also the first time I took on more than one project for this fundraiser. I was grateful to get feedback from fellow artists at Sherando and have them help me grow in my career as an artist.”

100% of the proceeds from the sale of the coloring books will support the Sherando High School art department. Books are now on sale at the following locations: Sherando High School Art Department, Gore’s Fresh Meats & Deli, Richards Fruit Market, Newtown Mercantile, The FCPS School Board Office Art Show, and the gift shop at Handley Library (limited hours). Books will be on sale at the Apple Blossom Souvenir Store in the Apple Blossom Mall beginning April 3rd.

Jesse Palmer to Serve as Grand Marshal

TV Personality and Sports Commentator Jesse Palmer to serve as the 99 ^th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® Grand Marshal

Festival President, Jeremy Luttrell is pleased to announce that Jesse Palmer, television host, sports analyst and former NFL quarterback, will serve as Grand Marshal for the 99 ^th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival®.

Jesse Palmer is the host of ABC’s “The Bachelor” franchises while also hosting The Food Network’s popular “Spring Baking Championship,” “Summer Baking Championship” and “Holiday Baking Championship.”

A former quarterback for the University of Florida as well as the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers, he is also a college football analyst on ESPN and ABC. He continues to delight fans, by appearing in EA Sports’ College Football ’25 and '26 video games and hosting the Oscars® Red Carpet Show.

He has also served as host of the Emmy® Award- winning DailyMail TV, “The Proposal,” “The Ultimate Surfer” and Disney Parks’ holiday specials. Palmer was a special contributor for “Good Morning America” as well as a contributor across all ABC News platforms focusing on major stories, news of the day and signature live events.

In fall 2024, Palmer combined his deep roots in fashion and sports with the launch of his clothing line, J.Palmer, in partnership with Fanatics.

Palmer resides in Miami with his wife and daughter.

The title of Miss In-Town was awarded to Molly Maynard , 16, sponsored by the Gore Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company, who will lead the Firefighters Parade in the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival on May 1. Molly’s ambition is to pursue a career in nursing.

Natalie Rasmussen , 17, was selected from a field of six as the 2026 Miss Out of Town Honorary Fire Chief. She represents the Toms Brook Volunteer Fire Department. Natalie plans to attend Shenandoah University to major in Exercise Science.

The annual contest, held at James Wood Middle School, put the contestants through categories ranging from dress for success, or business-wear, and evening gowns, to sharing a personal statement about their ambitions, who they admire, and how they represent their fire company.

During the pageant, the contestants are escorted on and off the stage by representatives from their respective fire companies.

The Miss In-Town runner-up went to Bella Walters, 17, who represented Middletown Volunteer Fire and Rescue.

Lillian Campbell, 19, representing Elkton Volunteer Fire Company, was named the Miss Out of Town runner-up.

The 2026 In-Town Contestants are: Alexis Brown (Gainesboro), Bella Walters (Middletown), Madison Langley (Clear Brook), Paige Littman (Round Hill), Sophia Aquila (Greenwood), and Molly Maynard (Gore).

The In-Town and Out-of-Town Miss Honorary Fire and Rescue Chief Contest, presented by Trex, will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday at James Wood Middle School in Winchester.

The contest, where local fire companies are represented by a young lady aged 16 – 21, is one of the longest-running Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® events. Tickets are $10 at the door, children under 12 will be $5. Cash and credit cards will be accepted.

Ultimate Fighting Championship and Mixed Martial Arts Legend Royce Gracie to Speak at the Partlow Insurance Sports Breakfast

Ultimate Fighting Championship pioneer and mixed martial arts legend Royce Gracie will be a festival sports guest and speaker at the Partlow Insurance Sports Breakfast, bringing one of the most influential figures in combat sports to the community.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Royce Gracie grew up as one of nine children in the legendary Gracie family. His training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began at an early age as a playful activity with his father, Helio Gracie, the co-creator of the discipline. While formal classes were never forced upon the children, Gracie and his brothers spent countless hours at the family academy after school and on weekends.

Royce began competing in tournaments at just eight years old. By age 16 he had earned his blue belt and was promoted to black belt less than two years later. At 18, he moved to the United States to join his brother, Rorion Gracie, where the two began teaching private lessons from their garage—sometimes for more than ten hours a day. Together they later opened the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Torrance, California.

Gracie’s fighting career exploded onto the world stage in 1993 during the inaugural Ultimate Fighting Championship event in Denver, CO. Competing against opponents from a variety of martial arts disciplines, the 6’1”, 180-pound Gracie stunned audiences by defeating three opponents in one night to win the tournament. Despite often giving up more than 50 pounds to his competitors, he relied on technique and leverage to dominate.

Royce went on to win three UFC championships and remains the only fighter in the history of no-holds-barred competition to defeat four opponents in a single night. Following his UFC success, he continued competing internationally, including in Japan’s PRIDE Fighting Championships, where he faced top competitors from around the world.

Among his most memorable bouts was a historic 90-minute match against Japanese superstar Kazushi Sakuraba during the PRIDE Grand Prix 2000—still the longest mixed martial arts match ever recorded. Gracie also faced Olympic judo gold medalist Hidehiko Yoshida and famously defeated sumo grand champion Akebono Taro in the main event of K-1 Premium Dynamite!! 2004 on New Year’s Eve, submitting the 6’8”, 486-pound giant in just 2 minutes and 13 seconds.

In November 2003, Royce Gracie became the first fighter inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame alongside fellow UFC veteran Ken Shamrock. His influence on the sport has been profound, helping transform Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu into a foundational discipline practiced by fighters around the world.

Gracie has appeared on the covers of numerous martial arts publications including Black Belt Magazine and Tapout Magazine and has been featured in mainstream outlets such as Men's Health and GQ. In 2014, he was named one of the world’s 50 greatest athletes by Sports Illustrated.

Today, Gracie continues to travel the globe teaching techniques developed by his father. His seminars and training programs reach students across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Australia. In addition to training athletes, he has worked extensively with law enforcement and military organizations including the Central Intelligence Agency, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Administration, United States Secret Service, United States Army Rangers, and United States Navy SEALs through his internationally recognized G.R.A.C.I.E. training course.

Throughout his career, he has also trained numerous celebrities, including Chuck Norris, Ed O'Neill, Guy Ritchie, Jim Carrey, Josh Duhamel, and Nicolas Cage.

Despite decades in the sport, Royce Gracie continues to maintain an intense training schedule that includes running, weight training, cross training, meditation, and countless hours practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Annabelle Park, Daughter of Michael and Laurie Park to Reign as Queen Shenandoah XCIX

Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® Executive Director, Brad Veach, is pleased to announce Annabelle Park will reign over the Land of Pink and Green this spring as Queen Shenandoah XCIX. Annabelle is a 21-year-old filmmaker and creative storyteller driven by a passion for performance, music, and purposeful narratives. She is the youngest of three and was raised by two incredibly inspiring parents- her mom, Laurie, a music therapist at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, and her dad, Michael, an actor- both encouraged her creativity and passion for the arts from a young age.

Park graduated Summa Cum Laude from Pace University in December 2025 with a BA in Film and hopes to build a career as a film producer. Annabelle is inspired by films that blend imagination and heart, with favorites including The Wizard of Oz, Harry Potter, and Funny Face. A dedicated Broadway fan, she saw over 40 shows in 2025 and is constantly inspired by live theater. Annabelle has had the opportunity to perform on iconic stages such as Radio City Music Hall and Madison Square Garden and made a small Broadway debut during the Jonas Brothers’ Broadway residency. She also studied abroad in Tanzania, Africa with the non-profit Global Empowerment Theatre, where she taught children English through theater.

Music is essential in Annabelle’s life. She loves attending concerts and spending her free time playing the piano. She grew up playing soccer (earning the nickname “Apple” from her first coach) and carries that same determination into everything she does. As a proud endometriosis warrior, Annabelle navigates daily challenges with resilience and refuses to let them stand in the way of her goals.

Queen Shenandoah-Designate will be crowned by her mother and father during the Festival’s Coronation ceremony at John Handley High School on Friday, May 1, 2026 at 1:30 pm. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center on the campus of Shenandoah University. Burroughs will be riding in the Hang 10 Firefighters’ Parade on Friday, May 1 at 6:00 p.m. and the Glo Fiber Grand Feature Parade on Saturday, May 2, which kicks off at 1:30 p.m.

As a six-time World Champion and Olympic Gold Medalist, Jordan Burroughs is the most decorated freestyle wrestler in American history. Originally from Sicklerville, New Jersey, Burroughs rose to national prominence at the University of Nebraska, where he captured two NCAA Division I national titles and won the Hodge Trophy in 2011.

Post college, Burroughs represented Team USA on the world stage from 2011 until 2024, making two Olympic teams and 10 world teams, and accumulating 10 world and Olympic medals.

Beyond competition, Jordan Burroughs is deeply committed to growing the sport of wrestling and mentoring the next generation of athletes. Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival ^® Crowns Lillian Lewis Miss Spirit of Apple Blossom Volunteer Teen

The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival ^® crowned its first Miss Spirit of Apple Blossom Volunteer Teen on Saturday, January 17, 2026.

Lillian Lewis, a sixteen-year-old sophomore at John Handley High School was crowned the title of Miss Spirit of Apple Blossom Volunteer Teen after competing in the Miss Apple Blossom Pageant in November. She will join Miss Apple Blossom Volunteer, Olivia Escalante, and Miss Apple Blossom Teen Volunteer, Brilea Hamilton, as official hosts during the 99 ^th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival which takes place from April 24 through May 3, 2026. Lewis will go on to compete for the title of Miss Spirit of Virginia Teen in Lynchburg this August.

Pageant co-directors, Susan Helsley and Linda Edwards, hosted the crowning at the Hilton Garden Inn where festival leaders, friends and family celebrated the occasion. “We are so thrilled that Miss Apple Blossom has now gone to Virginia Volunteer, so we had the option to crown three young ladies. [With Virginia Volunteer] the winners come away with so many scholarships,” said Helsley.

Of her new title, Lewis said, “I’m just so excited and grateful for this opportunity and am looking forward to meeting so many people throughout Apple Blossom.” She first learned of the Miss Apple Blossom pageant two years ago when she attended as an audience member, and last spring she began working towards the goal of competing.

99 ^th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival ^® Receives Virginia Tourism Corporation Grant for Tourism Marketing

Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival ^® received a $20,000.00 grant from the Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC)’s Special Events & Festivals Sponsorship Program (SEF) for the 2026 festival, hosted April 24 ^th through May 3 ^rd , 2026. The Virginia Tourism Corporation matching grant supports the festival’s advertising efforts and operations that attracts over 100,000 visitors to Winchester, VA during the 10-day festival.

Virginia Tourism Corporation will award more than $885,733 in matching grant funds to 88 special events and festivals during this grant round, ultimately impacting 324 combined partners. The VTC Special Events & Festivals Sponsorship Program is designed to increase visitor spending by maximizing limited marketing and event production dollars to stimulate overnight visitation through new tourism marketing and event expansion partnerships. The program also extends the iconic Virginia is for Lovers brand to drive special event and festival visitation. Each GO Virginia region is allocated 20 percent of available funds, creating a diverse portfolio of supported events across the Commonwealth.

In this funding cycle, local partners will commit more than $4.8 million in public-private funds to match VTC funding, generating more than $5.68 million in new marketing and event production activity focused on increasing overnight visitation to Virginia in 2026. In total, the awards will support 88 special events and festivals and impact 526 tourism-related partners statewide.

Using the hub-and-spoke tourism model to create multi-day itineraries, four Virginia entities partner financially to apply for funding. Partners may consist of Virginia cities, towns, counties, destination marketing organizations, restaurants, museums, attractions, and other tourism-related businesses. With the special event or festival as the main lure, the program encourages visitors to extend their stays to experience Virginia Main Streets, boutique shopping, distinctive dining, and historic sites, generating significant economic impact beyond the event itself. These partnerships have proven results in driving creativity among applicants and attracting new visitors to a destination.

“The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival is arguably our region’s most established and iconic event, and this support from the Virginia Tourism Corporation helps ensure it can broaden its marketing reach to drive visitation, overnight stays, and economic impact for Winchester and Frederick County,” said Justin Kerns, Executive Director of the Winchester-Frederick County Convention & Visitors Bureau. “This investment reinforces the festival’s role as a celebration that draws visitors to our community from across the Commonwealth and beyond.”

Due to the forecasted inclement weather, The Floor Shop Apple Blossom Cash Party scheduled for this Saturday, January 24, 2026 has been postponed to Saturday, March 21, 2026 from 5:00-10:00 pm at Millwood Station Banquet Hall.

Event organizers have been in close communication with our food caterer and other vendors to determine deadlines for the services they provide. Multiple weather sources have reported that the winter weather storm is tracking further north and may have a bigger impact on our region. Festival Executive Director, Brad Veach states “The safety and welfare of our supporters and volunteers is our first priority. Event leadership identified the dates of other cash parties in the area prior to locking in a new date. We want to ensure there are no conflicts so the community can support their favorite non-profits and charitable organizations.”

A few tickets are still available for sale for the March 21 cash party and can be purchased (cash or check only) at the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® Headquarters located at 135 North Cameron Street, Winchester, VA 22601. Current ticket holders who cannot attend the rescheduled event can request a refund by Friday, February 6, 2026 by visiting the Festival office. Requests for refunds requires the forfeiture of the original ticket stub given to the ticket holder.

Celebrate New Year’s Eve in Old Town Winchester

Join us in historic Old Town Winchester for a day full of celebration culminating with a spectacular and FREE New Year’s Eve Neon Nights & Laser Light Show at the Old Courthouse Civil War Museum, street performers along the walking mall and the traditional Apple Drop at midnight on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, from 6:00 pm to midnight. Downtown merchants will be open for dining, shopping and live entertainment. Parking in Old Town is FREE on New Year’s Eve through New Year’s Day.

The midnight Apple Drop tradition goes back many years when First Night Winchester was hosted and celebrated in Old Town Winchester. Kathy Nerangis came up with the First Night Winchester idea when she learned about similar efforts in Leesburg, VA in the mid-1980’s. In 1986 Kathy launched Winchester’s version of First Night and it ran strong in Old Town Winchester for 35 years (1986-2021.) With the support of the Nerangis family, the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® is pleased to announce that this year’s apple drop is sponsored by Nick Nerangis in memory of his beloved wife, Kathy. Throughout the evening festivities, former morning radio hosts, Barry Lee and Lisa Herndon will conduct live interviews from local downtown establishments to talk about Kathy’s profound impact on First Night Winchester and how her infectious personality and volunteer spirit positively influenced our community. Kathy’s name will shine in neon and lasers as we ring in the newyear with the Apple Drop at the intersection of Boscawen and Loudoun Streets.

Throughout the day, visitors to downtown Winchester can take in and enjoy activities at several local museums. The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley will continue the First Night Winchester tradition at their museum location from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. The museum will host a family-friendly day featuring admission by donation to the galleries and gardens and fun activities celebrating New Year’s Eve and the MSV’s twentieth birthday, including face painting and more. The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley is located at 901 Amherst Street, Winchester, VA 22601.

The Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum will host Noon Year’s Eve from 10 am to 12:30 pm. The cost is $15/person, and guests will enjoy snacks, crafts, special visitors, sock skating, and a “ball” drop at noon. Festival Announces Selection of Maids

Four young women from the Winchester area have been selected to serve as Maids in the Court of Queen Shenandoah XCIX during the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival®, April 24ththrough May 3rd, 2026. The Maids are Sofia Elena Aikens, Emily Renee Hunt, Mary Keniford Wei-na Kimble, and Alexis Jeanne Plotts.

The Maids will participate in the Coronation Ceremony to be held on Friday, May 1, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. at John Handley High School. They will attend the Queen's Ball and Dance Party Presented by Insurance Center of Winchester, to celebrate the coronation of Queen Shenandoah XCIX to be held Friday, May 1st beginning at 8:30 pm at the Winchester Country Club. The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® is pleased to announce that tickets for many 2026 Festival events are now available to the general public. Tickets can be purchased here .

The Festival also wishes to inform attendees of a new Clear Bag Policy being implemented this year to enhance safety and improve entry efficiency. Guests may bring clear bags no larger than 14” x 9” or a one-gallon clear plastic storage bag. Traditional purses, backpacks, fanny packs, camera bags, and any opaque bags larger than the approved size will not be permitted. Prohibited items include weapons of any kind, outside food and beverages, alcohol, illegal drugs, coolers, bottles, cans, and aerosol containers. Diaper bags and medically necessary items will be allowed following proper inspection. Attendees are encouraged to plan ahead to ensure a smooth experience.

99th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® Theme “Keep Blooming Together”

Each November the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® officially kicks off the upcoming festival with a celebratory gathering of supporters where the Festival President debuts an annual theme. The unveiling is the foundation for building momentum through a series of events and special guest announcements through the winter and early-spring months that lead up to the Festival which takes place from April 24 to May 3, 2026.

Hosted by the Festival’s Apple Club, the annual theme announcement is an anticipated and celebrated tradition. The development, design and message of the theme is a collaborate process and reflects a fond tradition, detailed imagery and a catchy phrase endeared by the Festival President.

Jeremy Luttrell, Festival President states, “Each spring, Winchester, Virginia bursts into color as the Shenandoah Valley celebrates one of its most beloved traditions, the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival®. Every year, the festival president has the privilege of carefully selecting a theme that captures the community’s spirit, values, and hopes for the season ahead. For 2026, that theme is “Keep Blooming Together.”

In honor of the festival’s enduring spirit of unity and growth, and just like the apple blossoms that return each year, the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® continues to flourish through the dedication, cooperation, and support of the volunteers, buisnesses and citizens of Winchester and Frederick County. Nothing symbolizes togetherness better than the theme’s logo, a simple puzzle piece.

The 99th theme is once again designed by the Festival’s talented Creative and Graphic Designer, Erik Zimmerman. In describing the theme design, Zimmerman states, “Every theme provides an exciting challenge. President, Jeremy Luttrell, started discussions in June, and agreed on “Keep Blooming Together” as our title. Jeremy had the idea of a puzzle to illustrate unity. After several variations and renditions, we finalized the theme logo as puzzle pieces inside of a blossom shape, along with the pin design as one puzzle piece which as everyone wears a pin they are all blooming together. The program cover was quite the undertaking, as we both decided on showcasing all the past program covers and making it look like a puzzle. The past 20 covers I had designed so those were easily accessible, but the previous 70+ needed to be scanned from archive. Special thanks to Handley Regional Library for helping us with some of the first few programs that they had available in their archives. The final design was exactly how it was envisioned, the past 98 years all put together.”

This year’s annual theme announcement unveiling is presented by Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury and hosted in the tasting room at Vibrissa.

Miss Apple Blossom Volunteer and Miss Apple Blossom Teen Volunteer Crowned for 2026

The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® is pleased to announce the crowning of Olivia Escalante, 2026 Miss Apple Blossom Volunteer and Brilea Hamilton, 2026 Miss Apple Blossom Teen Volunteer . The competition took place this past Saturday evening, November 8 at Daniel Morgan Middle School.

Olivia Escalante , a 24-year-old graduated in 2023 from Virginia Tech with a Bachelors in Geography and Minor in Meteorology. Escalante enjoys thrifting with friends, sewing and quilting, horseback riding and taking dance classes.

Brilea Hamilton , a 14-year-old Broadway High School student, and plans to attend John Jay College of Criminal Justice and major in forensic psychology and minor in psychology and criminal justice. Hamilton is a competitive dancer, varsity competitive cheerleader and varsity gymnast. She is active in her church youth group and volunteers at Sunnyside Retirement Home.

Olivia and Brilea will serve as official hostesses of the 99th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival®, from April 24 through May 3, 2026. They will make appearances at many festival events and participate as Festival royalty as they ride through the Firefighters’ Parade on May 1 and the Grand Feature Parade on May 2.

Both titleholders will go on to represent the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® at the 2026 Miss Virginia Volunteer Competition next summer in Lynchburg, VA.

The Miss Virginia Volunteer (MVV) organization and the Miss Apple Blossom Festival Pageant today announced a new partnership that brings one of Virginia’s most beloved festival titles into the Miss Volunteer America pathway. Beginning with the 2026 season, the Miss Apple Blossom titleholder will advance to compete for Miss Virginia Volunteer in Lynchburg, with the winner progressing to Miss Volunteer America.

The Miss Apple Blossom Pageant—long celebrated for its community spirit, service focus, and decades-deep heritage within the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival—previously operated under the Miss America system. The pageant has chosen to affiliate with Miss Virginia Volunteer to align with MVV’s model of Service, Scholarships & Education, Responsibility, Volunteerism, and Empowerment and its growing statewide network of local partners.

Chicago Fire Actor and Retired Firefighter, Tony Ferraris to Serve as 2025 Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival Firefighters’ Marshal

Anthony “Tony” Ferraris, retired firefighter and Chicago Fire actor has been named Firefighters’ Marshal of the 98th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® by Jeremy Luttrell, Festival President.

Anthony (“Tony”) Ferraris is a seasoned firefighter with the Chicago Fire Department (CFD), serving on Rescue Squad 2 at Firehouse 91 in Chicago's Avondale neighborhood for 25 years and often contributing as an instructor at the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute.

In 2012, Tony had the incredible opportunity to join the cast of NBC's "Chicago Fire” and play the character of “Tony” on Squad 3, a role very similar to his real-life work.

Tony is from Chicago and had a lifelong dream of becoming a firefighter. He never imagined he might also play one on TV but when the CFD put out a call out in search of real firefighters as extras for the show he was picked.

Initially cast as an extra, Tony's expertise and authentic alignment with the character led to a recurring role, and he has since appeared in over 200 episodes.

Beyond acting, Tony contributes to the show's realism by sharing his firsthand firefighting experiences with the production team. As a member of one of the few Rescue Squad teams within Chicago’s fire department, Tony has been a first responder to several incidents including fires, car accidents, scuba rescue, and many other emergency situations.

Chicago Fire is one of three Chicago based shows on NBC, creating a powerful line up of primetime entertainment focused on the professional and personal lives of firefighters, police officers, and emergency medical personnel who sometimes interact in crossover episodes.

Tony’s retirement from the Chicago Fire Department in 2023 was a day of mixed emotions. Many came out to honor Tony and one of the highlights for him and his family was that his youngest son, also a firefighter in Chicago, was able to join in giving Tony his final salute.

Tony lives in Chicago today with his wife and their three children.

Ferraris will lead the Hang 10 Firefighters’ Parade, which steps off at 5:30 p.m. on Friday evening, May 2, 2025. The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® is thrilled to announce that the Washington Nationals Racing Presidents will join Nationals legend Ryan Zimmerman during this year’s festival! George, Tom, Abe, and Teddy are lacing up their oversized shoes for special appearances during the 98th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival, including a stop at the Partlow Insurance Sports Breakfast on Saturday morning, May 3 from 8:00 to 9:00 am in the Tolley Dental Zone at James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics and Events Center. The Racing Presidents will also greet fans as they ride through the streets in Old Town Winchester during the Glo Fiber Grand Feature Parade at 1:30 pm on Saturday afternoon, May 3. And don’t miss Screech , the beloved Nationals mascot, who will be bringing his signature energy and team spirit to the festivities.

The Washington Nationals Racing Presidents have been a mainstay at Nationals games since 2006. Originally a scoreboard video feature, the Presidents came "to life" in 2006. Jeremy Luttrell, president of the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® is honored to announce that that Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel, Honorary Member, U.S. Secret Service, will be a guest of the 98th Festival and will be riding with Sheriff Lenny Millholland, Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, in the Hang 10 Car Wash Firefighters' and Glo Fiber Grand Feature Parades on May 2 and 3.

DJ Daniel is a young cancer warrior and nation inspiration, who has taken the oath with over 1000 law enforcement agencies across the United States fulfilling his dream to serve in uniform while raising awareness of childhood cancer. Despite battling terminal brain and spine cancer, DJ has united communities with his courage, heart, and unstoppable spirit.

President Donald Trump had Sean Curran, director of the Secret Service, present DJ the honorary badge in the balcony of the Capitol during President Trump’s speech to congress in March 2025.

DJ has been honored as an Honorary Member of the U.S. Secret Service, recognizing his bravery, patriotism and the hope he brings to so many.

Charles Mann, a former twelve-year veteran of the NFL, three-time Super Bowl Champion and four-time NFL Pro Bowl Player will be a speaker at the Partlow Insurance Sports Breakfast as announced by Jeremy Luttrell, Festival president. Charles is the third all-time sack leader for the Washington Redskins with 83 regular season sacks and is tied for 13th all-time in the NFL for sacks in the playoffs with ten.

After attending the University of Nevada at Reno, Charles went back to school 33 years later and spent three years working on his bachelor’s degree in business administration. Six months later Charles went back to school to complete his MBA, and 18 months later graduated with a 3.83 GPA.

Mann has started two businesses since 2000. Alliant Merchant Services – Merchant Services Independent Sales Organization, his first business, was sold in 2010 and is still operating in Loudoun County, Virginia. In 2013 he started his second business, Charles Mann Enterprises, which focuses on Facility Support Services in the construction industry. Charles is also a licensed commercial real estate broker in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.

Mann is on the board of The Williams Center as a director. The Center’s purpose is to fight against the Opioid & Mental Health nationally starting with the first out-patient treatment facility in Leesburg, Virginia. He serves on the Advisory Board for Easter Seals, which works with children and adults by enriching their lives while expanding opportunities, especially those with disabilities. Mann, also, serves on the Virginia College Building Authority Board. The Board approves monies for universities in Virginia to update and modernize their schools.

Charles and his wife, Tyrena, have been married since 1984 and have raised three children. Charles is a proud member of the 70 All-Time Great Washington Redskins and is a part of the Sacramento and Washington, DC Sports Hall of Fame.

Brian Mitchell, a Super Bowl Champion and one of the most accomplished NFL players of his era, returns to the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® for the first time since 1993. Born and raised in Plaquemine, Louisiana, as one of seven children, Brian developed a strong foundation in both education and athletics. He attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette), where he set an NCAA record for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback.
His remarkable talent and work ethic led him to the NFL, where he started his career with the Washington Redskins in 1990 as a return specialist and running back. In his second season, Brian made history by setting NFL records for punt return yards and touchdowns, helping the Redskins win Super Bowl XXVI. Throughout his 14-year career, which also included stints with the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants, Brian earned three NFL All-Pro selections, a Pro Bowl appearance in 1995, and induction into the Redskins Ring of Fame. He remains second in NFL history for all-purpose yards and special teams touchdowns.

Beyond his athletic achievements, Brian is known for his positive attitude and commitment to helping others. He frequently participates in charity events, serves as a mentor to young athletes, and encourages individuals transitioning from athletics to new careers. Buddy Armel - Class of 2025

Buddy Armel - 2025 Sports Breakfast Hall of Fame

Buddy Armel would become synonymous with area stock car racing, and he would take his first victory at his home track of Virginia’s Winchester speedway in the summer of 1963. His name would become a fixture at area speedways.

His career began with the old “30X90” cars, a predecessor to today’s Sprint cars. Buddy began to win when he went back to driving the No.3 S3 for Lee Shultz. He also drove for car owners, Jerry Smith and Charlie Tabor. He was an aggressive driver that would be willing to “trade paint” at just about any moment on the racetrack. He was admired but feared by his competitors.

Armel took wins in Maryland at Hagerstown, and the Virginia ovals of Winchester, Saluda (now Virginia Motor Speedway,) and Eastside. In Pennsylvania he had wins at Bedford, Selinsgrove, and old St. Thomas Speedway.

Buddy, his wife, Betty. and their four children Tony, Brenda, Tommy and Barbara were all heavily involved in Buddy’s racing. Tony was a rising star, in his own right, but tragically passed away in 1981. Tommy was Hagerstown’s 1987 Daredevil and 1992 Semi Late champion and the 2009 Winchester Late Model champion, while Brenda was Winchester’s U-Car champion in 2013.

The wins were many, the championships were plenty, but through it all Buddy was a racer. He didn’t race to make friends. He was there to win. He was able to accomplish that by those who aided his career for nearly four decades. It is said the Armel family has a bond, like no other, and to this day the phrase, “It’s an Armel thing”, will last forever.

Ronnie Combs - 2025 Sports Breakfast Hall of Fame

Ronald Milton Combs (Ronnie) had a remarkable and impactful life, marked by a deep commitment to education, coaching, and ministry. He graduated from James Wood High School, Lord Fairfax Community College, Shepherd University (physical education) and Liberty University (counseling).

As a student athlete, he earned the Golden Helmet Award in football, lettering in football, and placing 2nd in the state in discus. In college, he continued his athletic journey by lettering in football and track and field.

Combs began his teaching and coaching career at Robert E. Aylor Middle School. After two years, his conversion to Christianity led his toward Christian education. He became a dedicated teacher, coach, and administrator at Shenandoah Valley Christian Academy, were he spent 38 years. In 2014, Ronnie joined Legacy Christian Academy, a newly established school, where he continued to inspire students and athletes. After 50 years of teaching and coaching, he retired in 2024.

In 2024, Legacy Christian Academy recognized his lifelong dedication to education and coaching by dedicating their new gymnasium to him, naming it the Ronald M. Combs Gymnasium. Throughout his career, Combs used sports as a platform for ministry, further strengthening his connection between faith and athletics and service to his community.

The selection of Princesses to serve in the Court of Queen Shenandoah XCVIII for the 2025 Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® has been announced by festival officials. The princesses include Omaieobari Ifejisola Aarami, Lauren Mackinnon Dennard, Reese Kaylie Luong, Ava Lynn Mullins, and Emeryce Marie Worrell.

The Princesses will accompany Queen Shenandoah XCVIII and her Court to all Festival functions throughout the 98th Festival scheduled for April 25th to May 4th, 2025. They will participate in the Coronation Ceremony to be held on Friday, May 2, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. at John Handley High School. They will attend the Queen's Ball and Dance Party Presented by Insurance Center of Winchester, to celebrate the coronation of Queen Shenandoah XCVIII to be held Friday, May 2nd beginning at 8:30 pm at The George Washington Hotel Ball Room. They will ride on the Royal Float in the Glo Fiber Grand Feature Parade scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, May 3, 2025.

Alfonso Ribeiro - 2025 Grand Marshal

Multitalented Alfonso Ribeiro to serve as Festival’s Grand Marshal

Alfonso Ribeiro , host of Dancing with the Stars and America’s Funniest Home Videos has been named Grand Marshal of the 98th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® by Jeremy Luttrell, Festival president.

Alfonso Ribeiro’s iconic television personality danced its way into our hearts with his talents as an actor, TV director, award-winning dancer, and Broadway star. Ribeiro has spent over 45 years leaving his unique mark on television, theater, and pop culture worldwide, having started his career at the age of 8!!

Ribeiro is currently hosting his 10th season of “America’s Funniest Home Videos” the beloved show is currently in its 35th Season. Continuing to demonstrate its timeless appeal as the longest running series on ABC.

Alfonso also hosts “Dancing with the Stars” on ABC. This past season set multiple records, including all-time highs in viewership and voting. His love of the ballroom and the series come through in his signature warm enthusiastic delivery each week.

Ribeiro also currently hosts a third series for ABC, the Saturday Morning wildlife series “Jack Hanna’s Passport” from Hearst Media Production Group.

Ribeiro returned as the host of A Capitol Fourth the 44th annual edition of America's national Independence Day celebration broadcasted live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol on PBS and will be hosting the beloved Special again this year.

Previously he hosted Game Show Network’s six seasons of the hit “Catch 21”, for which his work garnered him two Emmy Nominations.

Ribeiro began his career as a child actor encouraged by his mother and father throughout. Most notably, he landed on Broadway playing the lead role in the Tony®-winning musical “The Tap Dance Kid.” As news of Ribeiro’s tap dancing and singing skills spread, he was offered a recording contract with Island Records, for whom he released several dance/pop singles, as well as his role in Michael Jackson’s 1984 “Billie Jean” Pepsi commercial.

Ribeiro moved next to series television in the long-running NBC sitcom “Silver Spoons,” making him a teen idol. After earning a theater arts education from Cal State University, Los Angeles, he was given the opportunity to choose a role on the established sitcom “A Different World” or a new pilot called “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Showing an adventurous streak, he chose the latter and created the lovable iconic character of “Carlton Banks” for which he is known for throughout the world.

Having grown up in front of the camera, he knew that opportunities existed behind the camera as well and became a sitcom director. His diverse resume includes popular series like “In the House,” “Shake It Up,” “Are We There Yet?,” “The Wannabes,” “Meet the Browns,” “Cuts,” “Eve,” “One on One” and “All of Us.”

Ribeiro continued to make good use of his dancing skills and his competitive nature in 2014 when he won the 19th season of “Dancing with the Stars.” After finishing in first place, he hosted the nationwide “Dancing with the Stars” live tour.

Golf is also one of Ribeiro’s many passions, and he is currently a PGA TOUR Champions Ambassador.

He resides in California with his wife and four children.

Robert Carradine - 2025 Court Ambassador

NERD, Robert Carradine, steps into role of Court Ambassador

Robert Carradine , an American actor and musician, will serve as the Court Ambassador at the Coronation of Queen Shenandoah XCVIII on Friday, May 2, at John Handley High School at 1:30 p.m. Jeremy Luttrell, Festival president, announces, additionally, Carradine will make appearances at Festival events and will ride in the Hang10 Firefighters’ and Glo Fiber Grand Feature Parades. Tickets to Festival events are available at www.thebloom.com/events .

Carradine's biggest film success came when he starred in Revenge of the Nerds as the lead nerd ‘Lewis Skolnick’. To prepare for the comedy, Carradine spent time at The University of Arizona, where the movie was filmed, participating in rush week. "No fraternity picked him, convincing Carradine that he was indeed right for the part of the nerd that nobody wanted to claim as their own." Carradine reprised the role of Skolnick in three sequels, taking over as executive producer in the latter two.

Robert is the youngest member of the Carradine family, which includes actors, David and Keith. Robert was instrumental in securing his brothers to perform with him in one of the most unusual casting arrangements in movie history. Together the Carradines played the ‘Younger Brothers’ in The Long Riders along with three other sets of acting brothers: Stacy & James Keach, Dennis & Randy Quaid, and Christopher & Nicholas Guest.

Carradine considered his "first ambition" to be of car racing. He found that role in acting and won the cross-country road race, beating the favorite, Coy "Cannonball" Buckman’, played by his brother, David.

Robert landed a demanding role in Hal Ashby's Oscar-winning Vietnam War drama, Coming Home, which starred Jane Fonda and Jon Voight. His performance was acclaimed outstanding.

On television, Robert appeared on his brother David's series, Kung Fu, as ‘Sunny Jim’. Carradine played ‘Robert Cohn’ in the television mini-series version of Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises. He appeared in the HBO mini-series, Conspiracy: The Trial of the Chicago 8. Additionally, he was nominated for the CableACE Award in for Showtime’s As Is.....perhaps the most demanding role of his career.

Robert played father ‘Sam McGuire on the very popular Lizzie McGuire from 2001-2003. The show starred Hilary Duff as ‘Lizzie’.

Additional feature film work includes the western, Justice, as well as the holiday comedies, American Christmas and High Holiday. Recently, he completed the features, Cowboy Killer: A Love Story and 3 Killer Pigs.

While in Winchester, Robert Carradine will appear in-person for multiple movie screenings and live Q&As at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. The first will be a World Premiere Screening of the comedy/thriller The Cowboy Killer at 7:30 pm on Thursday, May 1. The screening and Q&A will also feature Winchester-raised, LA-based filmmakers Ben Solenberger and Jaymes Camery.

Robert will also participate in a rare theatrical screening of the 1980 film The Big Red One: The Reconstruction, which also starred Mark Hamill and Lee Marvin. The screening will take place at 11 am on Sunday, May 4. The 'reconstruction' title refers to is the re-working, re-editing, and re-structuring of Sam Fuller's The Big Red One bringing it closer to the film Fuller had originally envisioned. It includes almost 48 additional minutes of footage which was not utilized in the film's original release.

Carnival goers of all ages should expect several new changes this year including:

Carnival entry fee $5.00 (cash only.) Children 5 and under are FREE.
All guests aged 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or chaperone who is at least 21 years old. Each adult may supervise up to four minors at a time. Parents should be advised that minors may no longer be dropped off at the carnival without proper adult supervision.
No reentry if guests leave the carnival.
Entry and ticket sales end one hour before posted closing time each day.
No backpacks or large bags. Small bags 14 inches by 9 inches or smaller are permitted. Diaper bags that have necessary items for small children are permitted. All bags are subject to bag check by security.
No masks. Virginia Code 18.2-422 states it is a felony for a person 16 or older to wear a mask in public.
One entry and exit point to the carnival.
Increased security presence in and around the carnival.

You may be wondering, why all the changes this year? The new carnival location requires additional private security officers, police overtime, barriers, and new procedures. The entry fee covers additional security officers for bag checks and increased patrols in and around the carnival. The fee also covers the expense of renting jersey barriers and chain link fence to create a safer perimeter for guests.

Festival Executive Director, Brad Veach explains, “Our goal as a festival is to provide the safest environment possible. We want to do everything in our power to avoid incidents like we see in other parts of the US. We see tragic events like the truck that plowed through the crowd in New Orleans this past New Year’s Day, and we are working with our local law enforcement and emergency management officials to minimize these types of risks. Unfortunately, all of this adds cost to the overall festival experience.”

In recent years, there has been an influx of teen-related incidents reported by law enforcement. The new 17 and under policy helps ensure that minors are properly supervised by a responsible adult. Additionally, there has been an increase in face coverings including bandanas and balaclavas. The festival has worked closely with local law enforcement to enact these new policies and to comply with Virginia Code 18.2-422.

Jason Duley Named Prelate for the 98th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® Coronation

The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® is pleased to announce that Jason Duley will serve as the Prelate for the 98th Festival’s Coronation, taking place on Thursday, May 2, at John Handley High School.

Duley is the Senior Pastor of Braddock Street United Methodist Church in Winchester, Virginia. Growing up in Northern Virginia as a “preacher’s kid,” he was raised in United Methodist congregations in Springfield and Alexandria. His passion for faith and leadership led him to Old Dominion University, where he earned a double major in English and Education in 1991, and later to Duke University, where he obtained his Master of Divinity in 1999. In 2006, he completed a two-year post-graduate leadership program as a Lewis Fellow of the Center for Church Leadership at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C.

A dedicated mentor and community leader, Jason serves as both a Clergy Mentor and Shift Coach. He is actively involved in local outreach programs such as WATTS (Winchester Area Temporary Transitional Shelter) and CCAP (Congregational Community Action Project), striving to make a positive impact in the Winchester community.

Beyond his pastoral work, Jason enjoys running with the Shenandoah Valley Runners and spending time in the kitchen with his wife, Jennifer, where they love creating and cooking vegan Mexican dishes. Together, they have two daughters, Kaitlin and Hannah.

The Coronation Ceremony is one of the Festival’s most cherished traditions, where Queen Shenandoah is officially crowned in a celebration of history, honor, and community spirit.

Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® and Local Businesses Partner with Sherando High School Art Department Students for the Creation of the Third Annual Festival-Inspired Coloring Book

Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® and the Sherando High School Art Department have once again partnered up to create the third annual Festival-inspired coloring book. It highlights popular Apple Blossom events, including a few new ones, highlighting the ﬁrst comedy show event and ﬂying circus air show! SHS art teacher, Jillian Legge, shared that, “This project has become a fun way for the students to interact with the community and to become more involved in the Festival. The students have been able to express themselves through creating their pages, as well as being involved in the marketing and sponsorship process as well. They have really taken ownership over this project and it is exciting to see how proud they are of their work. We are excited to be able to oﬀer the book to any Apple Blossom 10K or Bloomin Mile runner at a discounted rate as part of their registration for the race! We are so grateful for the support of the Apple Blossom Festival throughout this project and all they do for the local schools.” Last year, the high school art department was able to use the funds that were raised to purchase a new sketchbook binding machine for the students to create their own sketchbooks, pottery supplies, good quality materials for our advanced placement art students, and materials to help with our art show. With the funds raised this year, the art department is hoping to purchase more high quality supplies, materials for our new 3D art course, and to be able to fund one or more interactive ﬁeld trips to expose our students to the art culture. Engaging the next generation of festival goers continues to be a priority for the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® and this partnership has opened another door to working with and supporting local students. This project has proven to be a perfect ﬁt for both organizations.

New to the art department this year, Helen Chestnut has played an integral role in helping the students to edit and ﬁne tune each page, giving positive feedback and constructive criticism when needed. "It has been so much fun to work with the young artists at Sherando to create this unique and collaborative project! Students really got the chance to see an art project through from ideation to ﬁnal product and had the opportunity to work with peers and teachers along the way. I am honored to be a part of this tradition at Sherando High School!"

Involving school participation has been an integral part of the Festival since its inception. High school bands have marched in our parades, showcasing their musical talents. Many students have participated in the Bloomin Mile race and countless students have attended the carnival and midway. The coloring book project reveals the incredible artistic talents and shows the connections each student has personally had with the Festival. SHS senior, Adriana Settle, the creator of this year’s cover, shared, “I had a lot of fun creating the cover and hope that everyone enjoys it as much as I did!”

Another senior at SHS, Keylin Lopez Monje, created the Stonebrook Country Club Tennis Tournament page and after asking her about her work, she stated, “I really enjoy playing tennis, so I wanted to create a page that I had a connection to. Last year I created the Fiesta Latina page and really took pride in creating that page because of my Latin American heritage. It has been a lot of fun to be a part of this project!”

One of the events new to the Festival this year, the comedy show, was featured by SHS sophomore, Alyssa Corbett, and when asked about her work, she said, “It was a relatively diﬃcult process to capture the perspective of the comedians that I chose for this page. The challenge was worth it in the end because I’m proud of the way it turned out.”

Twenty-seven Sherando High School artists, ranging from freshman to seniors, participated in creating the book, showcasing events that were highlighted last year, along with new events, such as the Winchester Regional Airport’s Flying Circus and Air Show and the Comedy Show. Nine of the artists involved in the book are seniors, and when they were asked about contributing to something that they may not personally get to experience the beneﬁts of, they all stated that they were happy to support the department and pass on a better environment for the next generation. They were able to beneﬁt from the new light tables, pottery wheels, ﬁeld trips and better supplies from the two previous fundraisers so they felt that they wanted to pay it forward to the students coming after them.

100% of the proceeds from the sale of the coloring books will support the Sherando High School art department. Books are now on sale at the following locations: Sherando High School Art Department, Gore’s Fresh Meats & Deli, Richards Fruit Market, and the gift shop at Handley Library (limited hours). Books will be on sale at the Apple Blossom Souvenir Store in the Apple Blossom Mall beginning April 5th. There will also be an opportunity to purchase the book at a discounted rate as part of the registration for the Apple Blossom 10K and the Bloomin Mile.

Mary Clare Davis has been named Queen-designate XCVIII

Many years ago, the founders of the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® had a vision that they worked tirelessly to bring to life. Today, it attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors.

The Billy Graham Family has been coming since 1972, when Rev. Graham was Grand Marshal. This year his great granddaughter will be the 98th Queen of the Festival as announced by Jeremy Luttrell, Festival president.

Mary Clare Davis, a junior at Grace Christian High School in Staunton, VA, will reign as Queen Shenandoah XCVIII. She is the daughter of Maury and Noelle Davis and granddaughter of Ruth Bell Graham. Noelle was queen of the Festival in 1993.

Mary Clare shares, “I’m so excited and honored to be Queen-designate for the 98th Apple Blossom Festival! This event has held a special place in my family’s heart for so long. I cannot tell you how thrilled I am to take part in such a cherished tradition. The festival represents so much joy, and I’m beyond excited to celebrate with everyone this year.”

She plays varsity basketball at Grace Christian. The Cinderella team had a winning season and became 2025 VACA girls state champions. During her freshman year she was part of Memory’s Hill Stable IEA team. She is involved in her church community where she serves as a student leader and a sponsor for sixth grade girls. Last summer Mary Clare served on a mission trip with Street Ranch Ministries in Memphis and will be returning this June. Getting to pour into others and to be a part of a Christ-centered community are important to her.

Mary Clare says, “The arts are a big part of my life, especially poetry and music. Whether I’m singing, writing, or just getting lost in a great song, creativity is where I feel most at home.” Outside of music, she loves photography, spending time with her friends, and spending time outside, especially with her “sweet duckies”.

The 5’9” Queen-designate concluded, “Being part of the Apple Blossom Festival this year is truly a dream come true, and I can’t wait to take part in all the festivities. I’m so looking forward to meeting new people, making unforgettable memories, and celebrating everything that makes this festival so special!”

The family tradition will continue at the Coronation on Friday, May 2, at 1:30 p.m. at John Handley High School where Mary Clare will be crowned by her mother, Noelle. The Shenandoah Valley Royal Family will attend many functions during the Festival and will be seen coming through city streets in the Hang 10 Firefighters’ and Glo Fiber Grand Feature Parades.

Ryan Zimmerman, “Mr. National,” named as Sports Marshal

Jeremy Luttrell, president of the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival®, is pleased to announce Ryan Zimmerman will serve as the Sports Marshal of the 2025 “Field of Blooms” Festival. Ryan’s appearance is being sponsored by Rubbermaid Commercial Products (RCP).

Zimmerman, who earned the nicknames 'Mr. National' and 'Employee No. 11', for his longevity and overall impact on the Washington Nationals franchise, spent 17 years in the big leagues and has become the face of a generation for DC sports enthusiasts. A two-time All-Star and 2019 World Series champion, Ryan holds franchise records for games played, hits, home runs, RBI, and runs amongst many others. Ryan debuted for the Nationals in 2005, just a few months after becoming the team’s first-ever draft pick out of the University of Virginia.

Off the field, Ryan’s commitment to the community has been unrivaled since stepping foot in DC. He has been recognized with the Jefferson Award for public service, the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award for character and integrity, while he is also a multi-time Roberto Clemente and Branch Rickey Award nominee recognizing his achievements in community accomplishments. Ryan has been instrumental in helping raise awareness and funds in the fight against multiple sclerosis (MS) – and via his ziMS Foundation, has given back more than $4 million to this cause. In 2020 when COVID struck, Ryan became one of the first professional athletes to raise funds for first responders and health care workers via his “Pro’s for Heroes” campaign, and he continues to look to use his influence in helping others through a number of initiatives to this day.

At home in McLean, VA, Ryan and his wife, Heather, are proud parents of four (4) while he continues to work with the Washington Nationals as an ownership advisor.

Zimmerman will make appearances at different Festival events including the Hang 10 Car Wash Firefighters’ Parade on Friday, May 2, at 5:30 p.m. He will be the keynote speaker at the Partlow Sports Breakfast in the Tolley Dental Zone at the James R. Wilkins, Jr, Athletic and Events Center on the Shenandoah University campus on Saturday, May 3 at 9 a.m. That afternoon he will be riding in the glo fiber Grand Feature Parade , which will step off at 1:30 p.m.

Amelia Draper - Speaker at Ladies Horticultural Luncheon

Amelia Draper named as Speaker for Ladies Horticultural Luncheon

Jeremy Luttrell, president of the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® is pleased to announce Amelia Draper as the featured speaker for the Ladies Horticultural Luncheon.

Amelia Draper is a meteorologist with Storm Team4. Her forecasts can be seen during the midday and evening editions of News4 and on NBC Washington digital properties. She joined News4 in March 2013.

A native of Frederick, Maryland, Draper had wanted to forecast the weather in Washington, D.C., since she started studying meteorology at Penn State University. In fact, she graduated from college early so she could start working.

Draper's first job was with CNET in State College, Pennsylvania. While forecasting weather there, she became very familiar with weather phenomena such as lake effect snow, which helped her land her next job as weekend meteorologist for WJET/WFXP in Erie, Pennsylvania. Erie recorded its second snowiest winter on record during Draper's first year there. From there, she joined the morning shift at WIVB-WNLO in Buffalo.

The opportunity to be closer to family and friends brought her back to the D.C. area as a member of Washington’s #1 weather team. She brought extensive experience covering snowy winters, spring storms and summer heat.

Fitness is a big part of Draper's life, from her high school job as a snowboard instructor at Whitetail Ski Resort to playing on field hockey and lacrosse teams to her current activities which include yoga, golf and running.

Draper lives in Montgomery County with her husband and son.

Jordan Crenshaw will be Keynote Speaker at Valley Health Business at the Bloom

Jordan Crenshaw , senior vice president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Technology Engagement Center (C_TEC), has been named by Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® president, Jeremy Luttrell, as the keynote speaker at the 2025 Valley Health Business at the Bloom presented by Top of Virginia Regional Chamber. Crenshaw’s message will be “Empowering Business with AI”.

Crenshaw leads the day-to-day operations of the Technology Center’s policy team. He also manages the Chamber’s privacy working group, which is composed of nearly 300 companies and trade associations and is responsible for developing model privacy legislation and principles. Prior to his role at C_TEC, Crenshaw led the Chambers’ Telecommunications and E-Commerce Policy Committee, which analyzed federal privacy, cloud computing, broadband, interned, e-commerce and broadcast policies that impact U.S. businesses.

Before joining the Chamber, Crenshaw was an attorney focused on environmental issues and consumer privacy laws. He worked at McGuireWoods, LLP, assisting discovery issues for environmental nuisance, TCPA, and other civil litigation. Crenshaw also held roles in the Virginia Senate leadership, the Office of the Attorney General of Virginia, the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Administrative Law Judges, and the National to Work Defense Foundation.

He earned both his undergraduate degree and Juris Doctor from the College of William and Mary. He is licensed to practice law in Virginia and is a Certificated Information Policy Professional (CIPP/US). Crenshaw and his wife, Molly, and their daughter, Charlotte, live in Virginia.

The luncheon will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, April 30, at the Tolley Dental Zone in the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center on the campus of Shenandoah University.

Natalie White, Miss Virginia Association of Fairs, to attend Festival

Natalie White, representing the Russell County Fair, was crowned Miss Virginia Association of Fairs 2025 during the 107th conference in Williamsburg, VA.. Jeremy Luttrell, president of the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® is pleased to announce that Natalie will be a special guest at the upcoming springtime Festival event.

Natalie is a Roan Scholar at East Tennessee State University where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Health Science. At ETSU, she is President of the Pre-dental chapter and Social Media Chair of Cure ETSU. A resident of Nickelsville, Natalie was Valedictorian of the class of 2022 at Twin Springs High School where she was dually enrolled at Mountain Empire Community College, earning a General Education degree while in high school. She excelled in cheerleading, forensics, and Scholastics Bowl, all for which she served as Captain. For her original oratory in forensics, she was named State Champion. She plans to attend dental school to pursue a career as a general dentist.
Natalie is a strong advocate for the importance of and need for proper oral hygiene through her platform, Smile with NAT. She has accumulated over 500 hours of community service, including 200 hours while treating 500 dental patients in the Appalachian region of Virginia and Tennessee. For her efforts, she was named Outstanding Volunteer with Miles for Smiles. A published author, Natalie wrote Tony the Tooth which she shares in elementary schools to encourage healthy smiles.
During her year of service, Natalie will travel across Virginia serving as the official ambassador for the Virginia Association of Fairs at many fairs and festivals. She will also be the spokesperson for the Miss VAF community service program, “Read to Succeed” that, in just a few years, has collected almost 80,000 books. The VAF serves its members through representation, education, information, and direction which will enhance their productivity, economic viability, and administrative capability, thus enhancing the economic growth, development, and quality of life of Virginia communities.

Natalie will be attending many events during the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® on May 3 and 4.

Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® Receives Virginia Tourism Corporation Grant for Tourism Marketing

The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® received a $20,000 grant from the Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC)’s Special Events & Festivals Sponsorship Program (SEF) for its Air Show, Comedy Show, Blossom Artisan & Faire and Family Fun Party events.
The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® will supply $20,000 in matching funds for the ten-day festival with over fifty exciting events, ensuring there is something for everyone to enjoy. From 2 parades and a 10K race to dances, luncheons, and dinners, the festivities offer a wide range of activities for all ages. This year, we aim to emphasize and focus on four new events to increase hotel occupancy and boost event attendance. The first weekend of the festival, Friday, April 25 to Sunday, April 27, 2025, we have three new events planned: the Air Show presented by Omps Funeral Home and Cremation Center at the Winchester Regional Airport, a Comedy Show, and the Blossom Artisan and Faire featuring a kids zone. Additionally, we have added the Valley Pediatric Dentistry Family Fun Party on Tuesday, April 29th, at the Tolley Dental Zone at Shenandoah University’s James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Event Center. These new events are set to attract visitors from outside the area, encouraging overnight stays and boosting tourism, in addition to the 50 other festival events. Our goal is to highlight these exciting additions and draw visitors from throughout the mid-Atlantic region.

Virginia Tourism Corporation will award more than $812,139 in matching grant funds to 81 special events and festivals as part of this program, ultimately impacting 324 combined partners. The VTC Special Events & Festivals Sponsorship Program is designed to leverage
local marketing and event production dollars with matching state funds to increase overnight visitation, improve the visitor experience, and increase traveler spending at Virginia special events and festivals. The program also extends the Virginia is for Lovers brand to drive special event and festival visitation. Each Go Virginia region is limited to 20% of available funds creating a matrix of sponsored special events and festivals statewide.

Using the hub and spoke tourism model to create multi-day itineraries, four Virginia entities partner financially to apply for funding. Partners may consist of Virginia cities, towns, counties, destination marketing organizations, restaurants, museums, attractions, and other tourism-related businesses. With the special event or festival as the main lure, the program is designed to encourage visitors to extend their stay to experience Virginia Main Streets, boutique shopping, unique restaurants, and historic sites creating significant economic impact driven by the special event or festival.

This funding cycle, local partners will commit more than $4.8 million in private-public sector funds to match the VTC funding, providing more than $5.62 million in new marketing and event production activity focused on increasing overnight visitation to Virginia in 2025. 98th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® Theme: “Field of Blooms”

The unveiling of the 98th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® annual theme, and its distinctive artwork, represents the official kickoff of the Festival every November. The theme announcement is the foundation for building momentum through the unveiling of newsworthy events and special guest announcements throughout the winter and early-spring months that lead up to the Festival which takes place from April 25 to May 4, 2025.

Hosted by the Festival’s Apple Club, the annual theme announcement is an anticipated and celebrated tradition. The messaging, design and development of the theme is a collaborate process through a series of meetings consisting of the Festival’s President, Executive Director, and Creative Director. Oftentimes the theme design reflects a fond tradition, detailed imagery and a catchy phrase endeared by the Festival President.

Jeremy Luttrell, Festival President states, “The symbolic change of season lets us know that the apples will soon be gone, and the apple trees will become dormant to protect themselves from the harsh winter ahead. The bleak and bare branches that winter brings will awaken from their slumber in the spring and delicate pink and white blossoms take their place in the “Field of Blooms”. The theme for the 98th Festival, “Field of Blooms” evokes the beauty of spring in the countryside where blossoms signal the promise of an abundant harvest ahead. This celebration of vibrant blossoms captures the spirit of new beginnings and the anticipation of all that is yet to come.”

The 98th theme is once again designed by the Festival’s talented Creative Director, Erik Zimmerman. In describing the theme design and inspiration, Zimmerman states, “Our theme title, “Field of Blooms”, was originally inspired by the popular 1989 film “Field of Dreams”. The large moon in the background was an iconic image from the movie poster. Instead of corn fields and farmland, I used apple blossom trees and mountains as a local feel. As the design progressed, it took on a bit of a “Wizard of Oz” flavor with abstract blossom trees, pink brick road, and atmospheric sky, done in a mixed media style of hand-drawn artwork and realistic photography. The finishing touch, a suggestion by President Jeremy Lutrell, was to add the apple within the moon, to represent the local apple industry and evolution from apple blossoms to apples. Overall, the color scheme and design is a playful and fun representation of the theme title and the Festival heritage.”

James Omps - Class of 2024

James Omps - 2024 Sports Breakfast Hall of Fame

James Michael "Jimmy" Omps was born August 4th, 1935, in a farmhouse on the Kernstown Civil War Battlefield in Kernstown, Virginia, now a southern section of the City of Winchester. His education began at John Handley High School in Winchester, graduating from there with the Class of 1953. After high school, Jimmy graduated from Shepherd College in 1957 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education, graduated from the University of Virginia in 1969 with a master’s degree in Secondary Education, and, in 1989, he received his certification as a Certified Athletic Administrator from the NIAAA. Jimmy started his professional experience as a math teacher and a basketball and track coach at Martinsburg Junior High School from 1957-1959. In 1959, he began his long and storied association with his alma mater, John Handley High School, again teaching math and coaching basketball and track. In 1967, he became Handley's Head Basketball Coach, Athletic Director, and Physical Education Instructor, and in 1986, he became Handley's Director of Student Activities, a position he held until his retirement from the Winchester Public School system in 1995.

Some interesting odds and ends from the life of Jimmy Omps would include the fact that he set the John Handley long jump record in 1953 at 20' 6-7/8"; the fact that he started as a Freshman on the Shepherd College basketball team and lettered all four years at Shepherd; the fact that he set the court record at the old National Guard Armory on Millwood Avenue in Winchester by scoring 68 points in a game on March 4th, 1954 (no 3-point shots in those days); and the fact that, from 1960 to 1966, he served as a medic with the Air National Guard in Martinsburg, West Virginia. Jimmy's Official Bio lists 26 bullet points regarding the highlights of his career in Athletic Administration. These would include being a Member of the Virginia High School League Executive Committee, being a Charter Member of the Virginia State High School Athletic Directors Association and being a Charter Member of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.

Jimmy's Official Bio lists 33 bullet points regarding awards that he has won. These would include Who's Who among Young Men of America in 1957; All-Area Coach of the Year 1967-68, 1968-69 and 1969-70; Virginia Athletic Director of the Year 1977-78; Ancil Gray Service Award for outstanding service to John Handley Athletics, 1976; and National High School Coaches Association Athletic Director of the Year for Region 2, 1980-81 and 1987-88.

The Hunter Maddex Gymnasium at John Handley High School became the Maddex-Omps Gymnasium in 2010 for the two remarkable coaches and athletic directors. Coach Omps was the first person to be inducted into the Hunter Maddex Hall of Fame twice. He was inducted as a player in 1992 and as a coach in 2016. Although he is still affectionately called "Jimmy" and even "J. O." in casual conversation around the Winchester area, when his former students and athletes, to this day, are addressing him face-to-face, he is invariably addressed as "Mr. Omps." This is, plainly and simply, what is called respect!

Chris Garber - Class of 2024

Chris Garber - 2024 Sports Breakfast Hall of Fame

Chris Garber graduated from Handley High School in 1975. Her amazing athletic career at Handley was highlighted by her winning the 1975 AA Girls State Tennis Championship. This made her Handley's first female State Champion. After high school, she attended Radford College, majoring in Health and Physical Education, and starring at the #1 Player position on the Radford Tennis Team for three consecutive years. Post graduation, Chris received a master’s degree in Sports Education from Eastern Kentucky University, and a master’s degree in educational administration from Shenandoah University. She then spent 34 years in Education as a teacher and/or administrator. Simultaneously, she was a highly successful basketball and tennis coach. During her stellar career, she won a AA State Girls Basketball Championship at Radford High School, a AA State Girls Tennis Championship at Radford High School, and two AA State Girls Tennis Championships at Handley High School.

Chris served as the first female Athletic Director in Rockingham County at Broadway High School, and as the first female Athletic Director in Frederick County at Millbrook High School. Chris was inducted into the John Handley Hunter Maddox Hall of Fame as a player (the first female to be so honored) and into the Radford High School Athletic Hall of Fame as a coach. Chris offers the following quote to summarize her success: "John Handley High School afforded me the opportunity to strive and to achieve my professional aspirations with great mentors in Jimmy Omps and Nikki Isherwood. Two other individuals that have been huge influences in my career were Norman Lineburg at Radford High School, and my brother, Chip Garber. I have been fortunate to be in the right place at the right time to have the opportunity to have coached some very talented high school athletes."

Chris was the first female athlete inducted into the Hunter Maddex Hall of Fame. She was inducted into the Radford High School Athletic Hall of Fame as a coach.

James W. "Jim" Casey - Class of 2023

James W. "Jim" Casey - 2023 Sports Breakfast Hall of Fame

A native of Boyce and 32-year employee of James Wood High School, James “Jim” William Casey died at the age of 92 on Jan. 8, 2023. He is remembered and missed by scores of people in the area as he is inducted into the 2023 Apple Blossom Sports Hall of Fame.

Casey is survived by two of his three children – James M. and his daughter Ann. His son, John Casey, noted blacksmith and manager of the family farm, died at age 61 this past March. Coach Casey is also survived by his brother Jerry. Jim’s wife Eleanor MacDonald died in 2005. She, with Jim, founded and operated one of West Virginia’s most successful thoroughbred and racing operations. The operation was first named for Eleanor, and then after her death, for their horse farm Taylor Mountain.
Jim graduated from Boyce Agricultural High School and the College of William and Mary where he ran track, played baseball, and was the varsity football manager. After two years in the military, Casey returned to begin his career at James Wood High School, where he was a teacher, coach, and athletic director.

Retired athletic director at Handley High School, Jimmy Omps, said of Casey, “I remember watching Casey run the cinder track at Handley, the 100-yard dash in close to 10 seconds. He was very intelligent; he knew the rules.”

Don Shirley, a retired principal at James Wood, agreed that his intelligence was a comfort to him and a sounding board. “He was good listener…I missed that greatly when he retired. He was one of the most loyal persons I can think of. He remembered everything, the kids, who did what in which game. Unbelievable!”

Former JWHS student Danny Hoopes recalled that Casey was a great strategy coach; he was not vocal, but he was a confident man. Hoopes, who Coach Casey nicknamed Hoops, Jr. greeted him that way for years. Why Hoops, Jr? Hoops was told to figure it out himself. Seems Hoops was the 1945 Kentucky Derby winner.

Casey’s son, a veterinarian like his grandfather, said, “He never really got upset about anything. He could take things in stride.”

The 1954-55 school year marked the beginning of Casey’s run of success as head coach in three sports. In baseball, he never had a losing record; his football winning record included a 10-0 season in 1964, but he was at his best with basketball. After James Wood High School hired Casey as head coach, he had a record of 132-29, winning eight District titles.

Casey’s post-educational career as horse owner and trainer featured more than 1,200 wins, including a record 35 West Virginia Breeders’ Classic victories as a trainer. Casey moved from Winchester to Charles Town, W.Va. in 2002 after acquiring 146 acres in Jefferson County.

Like his grandfather, he was generous. There is the Dr. Joseph M. Casey scholarship at Clarke County High given to a student pursuing a degree in science or veterinarian medicine. The generosity and encouragement Casey and his wife Eleanor left to future generations are scholarships named the JAMES & ELEANOR CASEY ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS which are awarded yearly at James Wood High School, Millbrook High School, Sherando High School, Clarke County High School, Washington High, and Jefferson High Schools. The scholarships are used by an athlete to further their education and playing a college sport is not a requirement.

As late as 2022 he won 24 races and was at the track every morning. On the morning of January 6, 2023 Casey fell at the track and suffered a broken leg. He won the race while in surgery and seemed to be on the mend when he died two days later. His wife Eleanor had died in similar circumstances, A loose horse caused her to fall and break her hip at age 74 in 2005.

His son, James M. Casey, told the Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred journal, “He enjoyed it--the people, the horses, the races. He went to the track every day until the very end.” Casey’s racing resume records over 1,200 wins, his horse, No Love for Juba, a homebred horse, won the West Virginia Futurity on Jan. 8, the day of his death. Late in the Game, came in second.

Coach Casey’s son and daughter will accept their father’s induction into the 2023 Apple Blossom Sports Hall of Fame.

Debby Sanders - Class of 2023

Debbie Sanders - 2023 Sports Breakfast Hall of Fame

Debby retired from Frederick County Public Schools after 30 years as a Health and PE teacher, Department Chair, and Head Girls’ Basketball Coach.

She coached Millbrook High School girls’ basketball team from 2004-2013 with 84 consecutive wins. The team titles include the following: State Champions 2010, 2011, 2012; Regional Champions 2010, 2011, 2012; District Champions 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013; Regional Runner-Up 2009; and State Semi-Finalists 2009.

She was named State Coach of the Year from 2010 through 2012; Regional Coach of the Year from 2009 to 2012; and District Coach of the Year in 1997 and from 2009 through 2013.

After coaching, Debby served as an assistant athletic director for one year and volunteered at numerous sporting events. She was inducted into the Millbrook Athletic Hall of Fame and started the Millbrook “Go Pink” Millbrook vs. Cancer annual events that help to raise money to support individuals and families in the community impacted by cancer.

Jimmy Wilkins - Class of 2022

Jimmy Wilkins, JR. - 2022 Sports Breakfast Hall of Fame

James R. Wilkins, Jr., athlete, philanthropist, and entrepreneur, is the living example of how many of us would like to be considered in our home towns. A past-president of Apple Blossom, 1977 and 1978, Jimmy continues to sit on the Executive Board. He brings knowledge, savvy business acumen, and Festival history to the table. Always open to a chat about all things Festival, Wilkins gives advice to Festival committees as a guide, mentor, and coach.

An abbreviated overview of Wilkins life is best begun as an eighth grader at John Handley High School in Winchester. The year is 1959 and Coach Jimmy Omps noted there were only three athletic teams for males; football, basketball, and track and field. Coach Omps, himself, was a Handley graduate and knew intimately the grass football field, the “cracker box” basketball gym, and the 440-yard cinder track. Omps recognized in junior varsity Wilkins a competitive spirit and outstanding athletic ability. “Without a doubt,” said Omps, “he is one of the best all-round athletes ….” Omps noted that as a youngster, Jimmy had large hands and is proud that he has used those hands to bestow his financial gifts on his community.

Jimmy, the outstanding athlete, made All-State teams in all three of Handley’s sports, was inducted into Handley’s Hunter Maddex Hall of Fame and received in 1966 the first Handley “Medal of Honor” for service to the school system. Wilkins’ fond memories of Handley High as the quarterback of the 1960s, are reflected in the football field being named the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Stadium in 2009.

Returning home after college (with a cross-country record or two), he worked with his father in real estate and was President of Wilkins ShoeCenter, Inc. founded in 1947. Son, James R. “Ritchie” Wilkins III works with his father in the family businesses. Jimmy is married to Veronica “Roni” Flett.

Wilkins serves on the Shenandoah Battlefield Preservation Foundation, the Bank of Clarke County Foundation, Winchester Equipment Corporation Board and Handley High Centennial Committee. Over the years, Wilkins has received many leadership, community service, retail, and realty awards. He also has fire department awards and forestry/tree farmer awards. He served on Winchester’s Common Council for two terms and served on various bank boards. A public event was dedicated to James R. Wilkins, Jr. by the French & Indian War Foundation. The topic was “Handley High School: The Jeffersonian Soul of Winchester.”

Additionally, Jimmy has been dedicated to Shenandoah University where the Wilkins family has been known and celebrated since his father, James R. Wilkins, Jr., was instrumental in having the college move from Dayton, VA to Winchester. Now, the newest, largest, most impressive sports and event center in the region is opened: James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics and Events Center. The huge 77,000 square foot facility, opened in 2017 will serve the university and the community. Wilkins was awarded the SU President’s Medal for service to the university in 2018.

Marjorie Lewis, Chair of the SU Board of Trustees, told the audience at the naming ceremony for the center that Jimmy’s “got a huge love and commitment to sports.” She added that he was generous and wonderful, but it was not his money but rather his years of “time, dedication, and energy” which earned him the honor. And it is now one of the most used facilities for Festival events.

Brenda Neal - Class of 2022

Brenda Neal - 2022 Sports Breakfast Hall of Fame

Brenda K. Neal has dedicated herself to students since 1978 when she graduated from Shepherd College with a degree in health, physical education, and driver’s education. Not stopping there, Brenda earned a Masters of Communication in Education, along with professional endorsements as a secondary principal and administrator. With meticulous planning and a strong belief in the importance of athletics and all types of sports, her curriculum vitae is not only impressive and scholarly but also emphasizes her philosophy that athletics builds social and cognitive skills.

Starting her career in the Winchester Public Schools at Handley High School as a teacher of kinesiology for grades 9-12, she was also the basketball, softball, and volleyball coach. For her ability as a basketball coach, she garnered three Winchester Star Coach of the Year awards and her teams won six Northwestern District titles. That’s just basketball!

Looking at volleyball, Neal coached the teams to six more Northwestern District titles, four Apple Capital Tournament championships. To her went three more Star Coach of the Year awards and the title of Virginia High School League All-Star Coach. Her ability was so recognized that she was named Director of the Virginia High School League’s All-Star Games from 1990-1998 and held a place on the National Federation of High Schools Volleyball Rules Committee.

In 2004 Neal added to her sports responsibilities. After becoming the principal/lead teacher of Winchester Schools’ Alternative Learning Center, she rose to the position of Assistant Principal at John Handley High School where she organized what were known as “Study Circles” for students. These circles focused on diversity and building self-confidence for high achievement. She achieved this model along with all the regular assistant principal responsibilities of schedules and budgets and discipline. Her name was added to the Hunter Maddex Hall of Fame at Handley in 2004.

During her years at Handley High, she left her mark with a variety of training skills to help other teachers and coaches: cognitive coaching, effective decision making, and the most important APL strategies which help teachers with student time-on-task and classroom management. Her excellence was also recognized as Neal is a featured cast member in the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development’s video titled “Catch Them Being Good.”

Leaving her legacy of excellence in Winchester, Brenda became the Director of Access at Blue Ridge Community and Technical College in Martinsburg, WV in 2009. Blue Ridge CTC had once been part of Shepard College but had since been accredited as an independent institution. After several years as Director of Access, Neal was named as Associate Dean of Student where for the last nine years she supervised admission counselors, oversaw disability services, testing services, and student affairs. She retired in 2021. However, Blue Ridge still needs her service and expertise, and she is there still on a part time basis. Brenda said, “Oh, I work about 20 hours a week.” Retirement?

Neal is a reader, a hiker, and a golfer and likes warmer climates after 43 plus years of giving herself to education. Why her dedication, particularly to athletics? Brenda answered this by saying that besides the health benefits, “athletics teaches finding a common goal, achieving as a team, and finding that you do not need to be in the spotlight alone. We all achieve best in teams.”

Sonny Chapman - Class of 2022

Sonny Chapman - 2022 Sports Breakfast Hall of Fame

Charles Cecil Chapman, known as “Sonny,” was a champion in the eye of the community as the voice and chair of the Apple Blossom Sports Breakfast for some 20 years. His leadership in this capacity was a significant influence not only in Winchester and Frederick County but in the surrounding area.
His impact on the culture of sports is evidenced as in his saying that “Apple Blossom is my favorite holiday” and following that, at every department chair meeting, he would announce “there will be a sports breakfast this year.” He would grin and tease the group by giving away no celebrity athlete attendees.

Chapman’s co-chair for a number of years was Jim Gowdy, now an Apple Blossom Vice-President. Gowdy reminisces that Sonny shaped the Sports Breakfast with his organizational skills from securing a venue to preparing the budget. Gowdy said, “Sonny managed people…but his greatest challenge was to keep Russ Potts, co-founder of the event to a timetable.” For Sonny, it was all about sports and the breakfast was his way to show the importance of sports during his favorite holiday.

His wife of 45 years, Carol, shared with pride some of the many civic activities in which Sonny was instrumental. Sonny, she said, was involved in starting the Ken Thomas Golf Tournament, a Child-Parent Center raiser, gave much time and effort to Doo Dah Day (remember the song Camptown Races), a celebration for children and their families with a parade, race, games, and activities. Along with all these responsibilities, he was active with the Red Cross and the First Presbyterian Church in Winchester.

There was a calmness about Sonny Chapman. Past-President Mike Stanfield related that Sonny, as O’Sullivan Transportation Manager and prior manager of Smith’s Transfer Corporation, served his community often through the Exchange Club of Winchester as president and as one of the original founders of the Exchange Club’s Child Parent Center. Chapman also served on the Frederick County Parks and Recreation Board. He patiently got the importance of sports out to the community.

Chapman believed in sports. He saw them as a way to create camaraderie, team and community bonding, good physical fitness, and a sense of celebration. His influence on sports leaves a lasting legacy.

Bob Brown - Class of 2022

Bob Brown - 2022 Sports Breakfast Hall of Fame

“Horsefeathers!” This word belongs to Bob Brown. He often used it in coaching the many youth who played baseball with him and it is still a favorite word. It’s a good clean expletive that gets his point across as he works with Winchester Baseball’s Bambinos.

The Bambino League is a nonprofit organization under tax classifications of baseball for recreation, sport, leisure, and athletics. The stated goal is described as the teaching of baseball fundamentals, good sportsmanship, and good citizenship. Commonly known as Winchester Baseball, its internet homepage says: “the success of Winchester Baseball can be seen in the induction of its President Bob Brown in 2010; in 2015 Winchester Baseball became only the second league in Babe Ruth Southeast Regional history to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.”

Brown, like many of the best athletes of the area, started young, playing on Arlington, VA’s first little league team. He went on to be an All-State athlete in both baseball and basketball in high school. Parade Magazine picked him as an All-American in basketball and an All-Metropolitan second baseman. In 1956 the American Legion team on which he played won the Legion Championship. After high school, Bob went to Wake Forest on a baseball scholarship and participated in major league affiliated summer programs. Catching the eye of major league scouts, he was invited to try out for the Yankees, the Cardinals, the Braves, and signed with the Orioles after graduating. Brown’s background gave him all the fundamentals he needed to lead youngsters into the sport.

But desiring a secure and reliable income, in 1972 Brown came to Winchester becoming the owner of Bauserman Oil Company. He missed daily interaction with baseball. He missed the camaraderie. He missed teaching others what he had learned of the sport. In 1988 he began his tenure with Winchester Baseball as a coach and became its president in 1993. His belief in the game and its positive effects on our youth is such that he continues to be the President of Winchester Baseball. Baseball, says Brown, “teaches baseball fundamentals, good sportsmanship and good citizenship.”
Ivy Brown Tyson, Bob Brown’s sidekick, number one volunteer, and the mother of extraordinary
athletic sons herself, described Coach Brown with three words: fierce, competitive, and loving. Ivy said, “He teaches them baseball but he also teaches them to be young men.” Ivy’s accolades of Bob ring true. He managed the first All Star team – Bambino League- in 1991. Following the 1991 World Series Play, Brown’s new aims were to hold district play and regular tournaments in Winchester. To this end, he developed a coach training program. Brown joined with Winchester Parks and Recreation to help develop a plan to make the facilities up-to-date and welcoming to out-of-town teams. With the help of many businesses and generous individuals giving time and materials and money the facilities were soon tournament level.

Brown added to his list of awards both the Washington, D.C. Hall of Fame and the Home Plate Hall of Fame Club in 2007. This extraordinary effort of a state-of-the-art facility, along with his coaching, saw Bob Brown selected to the South East Regional Hall of Fame in 2010 and in 2011 the City of Winchester dedicated the baseball field as the Bob Brown Youth Complex.

In addition, Brown’s teams were consistent winners of district, state, and regional championships. In 2011 Brown was the manager of the very first 10-year-old World Series team. They were second in the country!

Bob Brown had a vision and he made it a reality. Thanks to Bob Brown, a multitude of young boys are now young men.

Russ Potts - Class of 2021

Russ Potts - 2021 Sports Breakfast Hall of Fame

Russ Potts created the Apple Blossom Festival Sports Breakfast along with Dick Kern in 1965. Former Heavyweight Champion Jack Dempsey was the very first sports celebrity to attend the Sports Breakfast.

Potts is a member of 6 Hall of Fames: National College Sports Marketing Hall of Fame, Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, Handley High School Judges Athletic Association Hall of Fame, Potomac State College Hall of Fame, Shenandoah University Hall of Fame and the University of Maryland Phi Delta Theta Fraternity Hall of Fame

Russ is a former Executive Director of the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival®, serving from 1969 to 1970. During his tenure he moved the Grand Feature Parade from Friday to Saturday attracting 86 bands in 1969 & 92 bands in 1970.

Potts was elected eight times to the Virginia State Senate from 1992-2008. He served as Chairman of the Senate’s Education & Health Committee.

Russ was the first Sports Marketing Director in the history of college athletics at the University of Maryland. He was also the Director of Athletics at SMU. During his tenure, both universities set all time average attendance increase records-the only time in NCAA history.

Potts served as Vice President of Marketing for the Chicago White Sox.

Russ Potts headed up the capital campaign for the Handley High School renovation and creation of the Emil & Grace Shihadeh Innovation Center. Russ helped the school raise over $22M for both projects.

Over his career, Russ has staged, promoted, or organized over 1,000 athletic events. He created the first Women’s College Basketball game on national television - Immaculata vs. Maryland in 1976, created the first Men’s College Basketball primetime television package, and organized the famous Georgetown vs. Virginia game featuring the battle of the 7 footers – Patrick Ewing vs Ralph Sampson which was televised on national TV.

Tommy Dixon - Class of 2021

Tommy Dixon - 2021 Sports Breakfast Hall of Fame

Born in Winchester, VA, Tommy is the second youngest of seven children to Rachel and Clark Dixon. Dixon attended first through seventh grades at Douglas School. After integration, Tommy attended Handley High School from eighth through twelfth grades. While at Handley, Tommy was a three-sport athlete, playing football, basketball and track and field. He was voted 2nd team All-State in football and basketball. After high school, Dixon studied health and physical education at Potomac State College in Keyser, WV and Berea College in Berea, KY.

During Tommy’s tenure, he coached football, track and field, and basketball. Tommy coached football at Daniel Morgan Middle School for nine years where his team only lost two games and had one tie; the rest were wins. Dixon was an assistant track and field coach when Handley won several state championships. Tommy coached basketball for 36 years and compiled a record of 403-228. Tommy coached his teams to nine regular season championships, 10 regional appearances, 3 regional championships, and 6 state tournament berths. Coach Dixon was also recognized several times as Coach of the Year at the District and Regional level. Tommy also was selected to coach in the state all-star game in 2000.

In 2001, Coach Dixon was inducted into Handley’s Hunter Maddex Hall of Fame and the Potomac State College Hall of Fame in 2010. On Saturday evening, December 17, 2016, during a boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball game inside Handley’s Maddex-Omps Gymnasium, the school announced that the basketball court would forever be known as the Coach Tommy Dixon Basketball Court.

Ken Mease - 2021 Sports Breakfast Hall of Fame

If you have attended the Partlow Insurance Sports Breakfast over the years, you will know that Ken Mease cherished the opportunity to visit and participate in the Shenandoah Apple Blossom. Ken began attending the Festival in 1999 where he emceed the Sports Breakfast. There were only two years between 1999 and 2017 where he was not able to participate in our annual celebration. In addition to emceeing the Sports Breakfast, Ken spoke at the Festival’s Ladies Horticultural Luncheon and served as the Court Ambassador for the Coronation of Queen Shenandoah. In 2018, the Festival recognized Ken by presenting him with a life pass to the sports breakfast. Ken returned to celebrate the Festival with us in 2019 but did not emcee the breakfast that year. Ken loves the Festival and continually went out of his way to support the Festival in many ways.

Ken Mease has had a tremendous career in sports television and radio in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast region of the US for over five decades.

Ken grew up in Selinsgrove, PA and graduated from Selinsgrove Area Joint High School in 1960. In high school, Mease played basketball and baseball, was band president and served as Lt. Governor and International Trustee in Key Club International. After graduating from high school, Ken attended Susquehanna University from 1960 to 1964. During college, Mease worked part-time for WKOK-AM-FM as a disc jockey, news, and sports reporter.

In 1963, Ken worked for WUNS-AM in Lewisburg, PA as an announcer and color commentator for Bucknell University Football for their ’64 and ’65 seasons.

Ken joined the Pennsylvania Air National Guard in 1965 where he completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX. He attended tech school as a communications specialist at Shepherd Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, TX. Ken completed his Guard commitment in 1971.

Between 1965 and 1975, Ken continued his work in communications at radio and television stations in Harrisburg, PA, Charlotte, NC, Pittsburgh, PA, and Providence, RI. While in Providence, Mease anchored sports six days a week and was recognized in 1973 with the Rhode Island Sportscaster of the Year award from the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

In 1975, Ken served as Director of Athletics for Robert Morris College (now University.) Ken was instrumental in the University’s leap from junior college status to NCAA Division I. Ken did play-by-play of Colonials basketball for three seasons, coached the school’s basketball team for one season. While at Robert Morris, Mease laid the groundwork for the school’s Sports Management program.

In 1979, Ken went back to news television as a sports anchor and weekday reporter in Pittsburgh, PA. Ken was awarded two Golden Quill Awards (the Pittsburgh Emmy) for the “Steeler Monday” sports feature.

From 1986 to 2003, Ken was the sports anchor and reporter for WUSA-TV in Washington, DC. Ken primarily worked as the station’s weekend sports anchor with weekday reporting duties. Ken covered Sunday night sports specials including Redskin shows. Mease also freelanced where he covered Navy Football radio and George Mason TV basketball play-by-play.

From 2003 to 2010, Mease joined CBS-Westwood One Sports Radiosportscasting including Redskins post game.

In 2010 Ken joined the Washington Freedom, an American professional women’s soccer club in Germantown, Maryland.

Paul "Wendell" Dick - Class of 2021

Paul "Wendell" Dick - 2021 Sports Breakfast Hall of Fame

Last year, on Friday, December 4, 2020, our community said goodbye to a beloved individual and friend to many. To many of us, Wendell was the face of James Wood High School athletics even after his retirement in 1991.

Wendell grew up in Frederick County, VA and went to James Wood High School (5-12 grades) when it opened in 1950. He graduated in 1958. Dick was recognized as James Wood’s “Outstanding Male Athlete.” While in high school, he was 1stteam District 10 basketball player, earned 14 Varsity letters, and participated in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He was one of the first James Wood High School graduates to have perfect attendance for all 12 years of schooling.

In 1958, Wendell enrolled at Potomac State Junior College in Keyser, WV, on a basketball scholarship where he led the team in free-throw shooting for two years.In 1960, he entered West Virginia University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education. He was a goalie on the WVU men’s soccer team and earned his MS Degree in Health and Safety. After graduating, he joined the Army National Guard in Winchester. While in Basic Training in Fort Jackson, he was selected as the “Outstanding Trainee” and was catcher of their undefeated softball team.Wendell enjoyed playing for a traveling semi-professional basketball team and fast pitch softball. Wendell was a Cross-County and Track Official for 50 years (1960-2010). For many years, he was also a “Color Commentator” for 92.5 WINC-FM Sports with Joe Pasquali.
Wendell held lifetime memberships in the James Wood Athletic Association, the Potomac State College Alumni Association, the West Virginia University Alumni Association, the Virginia Retired Teachers Association, and the Greenwood Fire and Rescue Company Association.

For several years, he served as Co-Director of the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival Sports Breakfast.

In 1990, Wendell was inducted into the Fast-Pitch Softball Hall of Fame and in 2000, James Wood High Schooled honored Wendell by establishing the P. Wendell Dick Athletic Hall of Fame.

Russ Potts will accept the award on behalf of the Wendell Dick family.

Walter Barr - Class of 2021

Walter Barr - 2021 Sports Breakfast Hall of Fame

Walter Barr’s coaching career bridged five decades. Barr was a two-sport athlete at Shepherd University where he played football and baseball. He graduated from Shepherd College in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science and received his master’s degree from James Madison University in 1970.

Walter’s teaching experience spanned from 1962 to 1998. He taught at James Wood High School, Loudoun County High School, Broad Run High School, Sherando High School, and Lord Fairfax Community College.

Barr began his coaching career at James Wood High School where he was an assistant football coach and head track coach from 1962 to 1967. In 1967, Coach Barr became the head football coach at James Wood and coached until 1971 where he went on to be the head football coach at Shepherd University until 1986. In 1994, Barr became the first head coach of Sherando High School. In 1999, Barr was asked to conduct a football program feasibility study for Shenandoah University which later turned into a head football coaching position with the University. Coach Barr returned to James Wood High School in 2005 and turned around a program that had not had a winning record in 26 years. Coach Barr concluded his coaching career with 210 wins, 94 losses and 5 ties.

Coach Barr has one of the most decorated football coaching records in the region.

Barr has been induced into the NAIA Hall of Fame, Shepherd College Hall of Fame, Clarke County Athletic Hall of Fame,James Wood Athletic Hall of Fame and will soon be inducted into the Shenandoah University Hall of Fame in 2022 (postponed due to COVID.)Walter Barr is a 3-time WVIAC Coach of the Year and 4-time Winchester Star Coach of the Year. In 2016 he received the Richard C. Shickle Award and in 2019 was bestowed the honor of having the James Wood High School Football Field named after him.
Coach Barr has been published in The American Football Coaches Guidebook to Championship Football Drills by Jerry R. Tolley 1984 and hosted many football coaches’ clinics while he was at Shepherd University and Shenandoah University.

Dick Kern - Class of 2021

Dick Kern - 2021 Sports Breakfast Hall of Fame

Dick Kern and Russ Potts were the Co-Chairmen of the very first Sports Breakfast featuring Jack Dempsey in 1965.

Dick passed away on October 1, 2020 at 100 years old and is represented by his grandson, Trey, Owner / Operator of Kern Motor Company. Both Trey and Dick’s son Rick were outstanding athletes at Handley. All three are members of the Judges Athletic Association Hall of Fame.

Kern was one of the founders of the Judges Athletic Association – one of the nation’s most successful high school booster associations. Dick is a past President of the JAA.

Dick was an outstanding athlete having starred at Handley High School as a quarterback in the single wing offense and later at Virginia Tech as the starting defensive halfback and linebacker.

Kern won the Williams Award as the outstanding senior football player in 1941 and was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles. He was unable to pursue an NFL career because of serving in World War II.

Dick was a highly decorated war hero in the U.S. Army during WWII and one of the youngest company commanders in the nation with over 300 men under his command.

Dick created Kern Motor Company, the longest standing automotive agency in Winchester / Frederick County.

Kern served with distinction as Vice Mayor, Chairman of the City Finance Committee, and Councilman-serving for over 20 years.

Dick Kern will always be known as an outstanding community leader and philanthropist.
