Sofia Aikens is the daughter of Bridget and William Aikens of Winchester, VA. She is the granddaughter of Giselia and Mario Viegas of Vienna, VA and Elaine and Walter Aikens of Winchester. Sofia is a freshman at James Madison University (JMU) double majoring in finance and business management with a concentration in human resources and minoring in honors studies. She sings soprano in the James Madison University Treble Chamber Choir and is enrolled in the Honors College of James Madison University. Sofia is a member of the Latin Dance Club and the “Girls’ Gains” weight-lifting group. She is a 2025 graduate of James Wood High School where she graduated as one of the top 20 students with a Certificate of General Studies from Laurel Ridge Community College. She was a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, and the Thespians Society. She has participated in annual musicals to include Once on This Island, Little Shop of Horrors, Shrek, and her most exciting role as Ariel in The Little Mermaid. Sofia was also a member of the James Wood Choir in the Chamber and Advanced Women’s Ensemble serving as section leader, 2023-2024 Vice-President, and 2024-2025 President and successfully auditioned for VMEA All-Virginia Honors Choir for 2023, 2024, and 2025. She was a staff member and eventually editor-in-chief of the James Wood High School yearbook, Woodbine. Sofia danced 12 years with Vostrikov’s Academy of Ballet, taking classes in ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, and modern. Outside of her accomplishments and hobbies, she also enjoys spending time baking, cooking, reading, crocheting, and going to the gym. Sofia’s mother, Bridget Aikens, is president-elect of The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival®. Her father, William Aikens, was a page in the court of Queen Shenandoah LX, Candace Leona Savalas; and escorted Queen Shenandoah LXXII, Amanda Davies. Sofia’s paternal grandmother, Elaine Aikens, was The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® President for the 2009 and 2010 festival years.
Festival Announces Selection of Maids
Four young women from the Winchester area have been selected to serve as Maids in the Court of Queen Shenandoah XCIX during the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival®, April 24ththrough May 3rd, 2026. The Maids are Sofia Elena Aikens, Emily Renee Hunt, Mary Keniford Wei-na Kimble, and Alexis Jeanne Plotts.
Emily Hunt is the daughter of Jennifer and Douglas Hunt of Harpers Ferry, WV. She is the granddaughter of Kriste and John Strawbridge of Franklin, PA, Maria Quillin of Lexington, VA, and Rose and Guy Hunt of Clarksville, TN. Emily is a sophomore at Shepherd University majoring in environmental engineering. She is a 2024 graduate of Jefferson High School where she was a member of the Golf team and a Health Science Technology Academy (HSTA) Scholar. Outside of school, she volunteers with the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® and enjoys making jewelry.
Mary Kimble is the daughter of Tress and Ronnel Kimble Jr. of Winchester. She is the granddaughter of Kay Bolliger of Winchester and Cathy and Ronnel Kimble of Linville, VA, and the late Murrell Bolliger. She is a freshman at James Madison University majoring in communication sciences and disorders where she is a member of the James Madison University National Student Speech-Language and Hearing Association. She is a 2025 graduate of James Wood High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, and Varsity Soccer team, receiving an all-district honorable mention in 2025. She was also a member of the Blue Ridge United Soccer Club. Mary’s mother, Tress Kimble, was a little maid in the court of Queen Shenandoah L, Laury Boone; and maid in the court of Queen Shenandoah LXI, Mary Clancy Collins. Her maternal grandmother, Kay Bolliger, was The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® President for the 2003 and 2004 festival years.
Alexis (Lexy) Plotts is the daughter of Steffany and Greg Plotts of Winchester. She is the granddaughter of Debbie Slaughter of Winchester, Margie Plotts of Muncy, PA, and the late Steve Slaughter and Ray Plotts. Lexy is a freshman at The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) majoring in marine biology where she is a member of the Surf Club and Guitar and Base Club. She is also a sea turtle nest monitor at Bald Head Island. Lexy is a 2025 graduate of John Handley High School where she graduated Summa Cum Laude. She was a member of the National Honor Society and 4-year varsity tennis player. She was also a graduate of the Mountain Vista Governor's School. Outside of academics, Lexy loves to create art and is a huge Star Wars franchise fan.
The Maids will participate in the Coronation Ceremony to be held on Friday, May 1, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. at John Handley High School. They will attend the Queen's Ball and Dance Party Presented by Insurance Center of Winchester, to celebrate the coronation of Queen Shenandoah XCIX to be held Friday, May 1st beginning at 8:30 pm at the Winchester Country Club. They will ride on the Royal Float in the Grand Feature Parade scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, May 2, 2026.
