The unveiling of the 98th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® annual theme, and its distinctive artwork, represents the official kickoff of the Festival every November. The theme announcement is the foundation for building momentum through the unveiling of newsworthy events and special guest announcements throughout the winter and early-spring months that lead up to the Festival which takes place from April 25 to May 4, 2025.
Hosted by the Festival’s Apple Club, the annual theme announcement is an anticipated and celebrated tradition. The messaging, design and development of the theme is a collaborate process through a series of meetings consisting of the Festival’s President, Executive Director, and Creative Director. Oftentimes the theme design reflects a fond tradition, detailed imagery and a catchy phrase endeared by the Festival President. Jeremy Luttrell, Festival President states, “The symbolic change of season lets us know that the apples will soon be gone, and the apple trees will become dormant to protect themselves from the harsh winter ahead. The bleak and bare branches that winter brings will awaken from their slumber in the spring and delicate pink and white blossoms take their place in the “Field of Blooms”. The theme for the 98th Festival, “Field of Blooms” evokes the beauty of spring in the countryside where blossoms signal the promise of an abundant harvest ahead. This celebration of vibrant blossoms captures the spirit of new beginnings and the anticipation of all that is yet to come.” The 98th theme is once again designed by the Festival’s talented Creative Director, Erik Zimmerman. In describing the theme design and inspiration, Zimmerman states, “Our theme title, “Field of Blooms”, was originally inspired by the popular 1989 film “Field of Dreams”. The large moon in the background was an iconic image from the movie poster. Instead of corn fields and farmland, I used apple blossom trees and mountains as a local feel. As the design progressed, it took on a bit of a “Wizard of Oz” flavor with abstract blossom trees, pink brick road, and atmospheric sky, done in a mixed media style of hand-drawn artwork and realistic photography. The finishing touch, a suggestion by President Jeremy Lutrell, was to add the apple within the moon, to represent the local apple industry and evolution from apple blossoms to apples. Overall, the color scheme and design is a playful and fun representation of the theme title and the Festival heritage.” Event ticket sales will be announced at a later date. Tickets can be purchased in person at Festival Headquarters located at 135 North Cameron Street, by phone at (540) 662-3863 or through our online ticketing system at www.thebloom.com. Live. Love. Bloom.
Winchester, VA – The unveiling of the 96th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® annual theme and its unique artwork represents the official kickoff of the Festival every November. The theme announcement is the foundation for building momentum through the unveiling of newsworthy events and special guest announcements throughout the winter and early-spring months that lead up to the Festival which takes place next year on April 28 to May 7, 2023. Sharen Gromling, Festival President states, “The theme’s inspirational message consists of three simple, short verbs that reflects the love our community has for this nearly 100-year tradition of celebrating the Bloom. It is an easy to remember, simplistic theme that is filled with energy and action - Live. Love. Bloom. In short, the theme inspires us to Live Fully, Love Deeply, and Bloom Forever.” The 96th theme is once again designed by the Festival’s talented graphic designer, Erik Zimmerman, of White Spider, Inc. In describing the theme design and inspiration, Zimmerman states, “I wanted the artwork for the 96th theme to be as simple and as powerful as the title "Live. Love. Bloom". A clean and bold design, incorporating traditional colors along with a splash of something different to provide complimentary impact and Festival energy. Typically, the logo is a simpler version of the program cover, however this year the logo came first, and they mimic each other almost identically with a strong design. The program cover only shows a slight modification to the logo art, along with a halftone blossoms background for a little depth and flare.” Event ticket sales will be announced at a later date. Tickets can be purchased in person at Festival Headquarters located at 135 North Cameron Street, by phone at (540) 662-3863 or through our online ticketing system. Veach, Executive Director Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® 135 North Cameron Street, Winchester, VA 22601 (540) 662-3863 | [email protected] | www.thebloom.com Winchester, VA – It is impossible to overlook the trials, tribulations, and uncertainties of 2020. Surely we all wish to forget certain parts of the year that was affected by a worldwide pandemic which caused havoc and raised fear. Fittingly enough, the 2020 Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® theme “Forever Apple Blossom” will go down as one of the most appropriate and inspirational messages in Festival history. It was and continues to be a message of hope that rose above the panic, anxiety, and insecurities that resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic. With a new year, we are promised a fresh start. In 2021 the Festival will be “Back in Bloom.” This uplifting theme will resonate far and wide as we plan out our favorite springtime celebration. The tradition of Festival themes has become an annual ritual that warrants its own celebration. The unveiling of the theme and its unique artwork represents the official kickoff for the new Festival and is the foundation for building momentum through the unveiling of newsworthy events and special guest details throughout the winter and early spring months leading up to the start of the Festival. The 2021 theme artwork was designed once again by the Festival’s Graphic Designer, Erik Zimmerman, of White Spider, Inc. The theme’s message reflects the challenges of the 93rd Festival, and the Festival will be “Back” in 2021, and we will be ready to “Bloom.” “I wanted the design to be bright, vibrant, simple, and strong, while focusing on the longstanding tradition of The Bloom,” stated Zimmerman. The swirling shapes making up the blossom is a personal style that Erik has used in other illustrations throughout his career. The background is a washed overlay on protruding bands of color. The choice of bright pink and green was to create some pop and a feel of excitement. The title was inspired by the secondary applied font and was modified by hand to mimic the swirling style of the overall retro design. Our 94th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® will look much different. Festival fans need to understand that we are working and planning under a new set of rules, and will result in temporary changes for 2021. Current statewide restrictions on indoor and outdoor gatherings limit the Festival’s ability to plan major events like parades and the Midway in Old Town Winchester. Largescale indoor events will transition outdoors under multiple tents at the Frederick County Fairgrounds. The Festival will scale back ticket availability to comply with the Governor’s Forward Virginia Phase 3 requirements and participation limits. Event-goers should expect to follow CDC guidelines and mandates in order to participate in events. Specific changes to the Festival schedule will be available in the Festival’s What’s New for 2021 press release series which will be shared with Festival fans and the media in the coming weeks. Event tickets will go on sale starting December 1, 2020. Tickets can be purchased in person at Festival Headquarters, by phone at (540) 662-3863, or through our new online ticketing system at www.thebloom.com. Make plans now to join us on April 23-May 2, 2021 as we get “Back in Bloom.” Media Contact: Bradley S.
